NEW DELHI: The United States has offered to sell its Patriot Missile Air Defence System to India. Patriot is a long-range, all-altitude, all-weather air defence system to counter tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and advanced aircraft.

The US gave the missile defence system to Israel in 2003. US forces used Patriot missiles in the first Gulf war to destroy incoming Iraqi Scud missiles.

India has been offered upgraded PAC-3 missiles. Sources said India had yet to make a decision.

The missiles cost $90 million a piece. Sources said India was also considering buying Arrow Missiles System from Israel and talks were in progress with Israeli defence officials. Sources said the offer came on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session last month.

The United States is offering India Perry-class warships, P-3C Orion reconnaissance aircraft, radars and a host of infantry weapons but what India needs most is to build an anti-ballistic missile defence with the advanced capability (PAC-3) Patriot missile.

According to highly placed sources, as yet the US seems willing to supply an upgraded but the older version of the Patriot (PAC-2 GEM+) and that this was discussed between India’s National Security Adviser J N Dixit and US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, who visited New Delhi in July to familiarise himself with the new government. He is due here again mid-November and India’s missile defence requirement is bound to be on the agenda.

America might sell India a PAC-3, but I have my doubts. We want to build a relationship with India, but not at the risk of losing a friendship with Pakistan.

Its kind of wierd, since India has the best from both sides. Usually a country can only get the best from one country (russia) since the other (usually US) doubts them.

What are we talking about here? PAC 3? Anti ballistic missile defence? and SUs and other lethal toys? Its just a waste of money. The fact is that the Indian Polity DOESN'T HAVE THE BALLS TO INITIATE A WAR EVEN WHEN THEIR NATIONAL INTERESTS ARE AT STAKE! What happened after Pakistan -sponsored terrorists, attacked the Indian Parliament? A lot of gas eminated from the powers that be. Yeah! Just a lot of GAS! You need spunk man, to go for it or your expensive toys are just that - toys. Deterence value? Thats a lot of bull too. Pak Terrorists are still up to their dirty tricks in 2005! Deterence or no deterence. So you've gotta be ready to use this stuff, right? And especially when your national interest is at stake. But as I said, YOU NEED BALLS!! But India doesn't have any. So why don't they spend the money instead on education, health, social security etc?

Your nick is mike singh and you have a scramjet as your avaatar and you're against the Indians building a hyperplane!!!

Totally paradoxical man!!

Btw.. militancy has dropped to 1/10th its level, in 2005...
ABM is necessary..for India is it is for the US..
And we are feeding our poor,
why don't you come back from which ever foreign country you went off to and help with that??

I think Indian missile/air defence is quite sucky ...

I think Indians will ponderate the issue very carefully. The Russians offer their S-300 (SA10 Grumble): Russia is a traditional supplier of Indian Armed Forces, can usually offer a very good price, the product is indeed very, very good, but usually Russians require cash payment, or a reduction of their foreign debt quote from the purchasing customer. The USA offer the Patriot PAC2+ GEM or even the missile-defense dedicated PAC3: the US are not a traditional supplier to the Indian Armed Forces, their products are usually more expensive but are usually very good quality and the US industries are usually more open to different payment solutions, there's even a remote possibility that, because of national interests, a part of the price is paid by the DoD through Foreign Military Aid schemes. There's a third possibility, though, albeit remote: the European ASTER missile system. While it's mainly a naval weapon, the land-based system is currently undergoing trials in France. The short-medium range ASTER 15 is almost ready to enter production, while the long range ASTER 30 is currently in a development phase. Delivery times will surely be much longer than the Russian and US systems, but maybe the need to land a foreign order ASAP will push the Europeans into making a "crazy" offer.

Don't exagerate. Pakistan has been very helpful with the American War on Terror. They're a good ally to have.

India've got it, but they have brains too, to know when to use em.

Pakistan would attack India with nukes without hesitation. After getting this credible nuke defence, i think it would be wise to consider attacks on pakistani terrorist camps.

Also Paksitan supported the Taliban before Sep 11 and a few months after it too . But they had to withdraw it because of heavy US pressure.

Besides it is widely accepted that Bin Laden is secretly recieving refuge by Pakistan. Pakistan is another terrorist-jehadi-islamic nation.

" However, assistance may come from a somewhat unexpected source. During Aero India 2003, the European missile giant - MBDA and Bharat Dynamics Limited signed a very promising Memorandum of Understanding to extend co-operation in development and also manufacture of all varieties of missile systems including anti-tank, surface-to-air and air-to-air missiles required both by the Indian Armed Forces and those abroad.(24)

MBDA is responsible for development of the Aster 30 SAM which has a limited ATBM capability in its basic version and a dedicated BMD version is under development.(25) Should India make full use of the MBDA-BDL MoU, technology from the Aster 30 and its variants - if not the actual systems - could be used to hasten the development of an Indian ATBM system. It is a golden opportunity and should not be wasted. Joint-ventures and technology transfers are vital for progress on ATBM systems in India - Almaz and Antey would do well to heed this.

India has also been enhancing its ballistic missile detection capabilities by purchasing two Israeli Green Pine radars and a large number of Aerostat radars.(26) "

Read : India, Israel boost ties; Pakistan nervous

Superb source on details of the Arrow :
www.israeli-weapons.com...

-------------------------------

India has alredy bought the Green Pine radar form Israel :

The Elta Green Pine early warning and fire control radar for the Arrow system. The radar can detect targets at ranges up to about 500km and is able to track targets at speeds over 3,000m/s.

The Arrow Weapon System features a state-of-the-art EL/M2080 L-band radar, Green Pine, based on the decades of experience in developing technological solutions for early warning and fire control defense systems.
The Elta Electronic Industries subsidiary of IAI Electronic Group developed the Green Pine early warning and fire control radar for the Arrow system. The radar carries the designation EL/M-2090 and includes the trailer mounted radar and antenna array, the power generator, a cooling system and a radar control centre.

Green Pine is an electronically scanned, solid state, phased array radar operating at L-band in the range 500MHz to 1,000MHz, and was developed from the Elta Music phased array radar. The radar operates in search, detection, tracking and missile guidance modes simultaneously.

The radar can detect targets at ranges up to about 500km and is able to track targets up to speeds over 3,000m/s. The radar illuminates the target and guides the Arrow missile to within 4m of the target.

The radar has the following features:

Phased array L-band radar
Dual mode operation - early warning and fire control
Long range acquisition capability - several hundred kilometers
Simultaneous tracking of dozens of Tactical Ballistic Missiles (TBM)
Clear discrimination between TBMs, aircraft and other missiles
ECCM capability
Transportability
India has placed an order for the supply of two Elta Green Pine for use with India's air defence system against ballistic missiles. The first was delivered in 2001. The Green Pine Radar system is already deployed in India. The radar system, developed for Israel's Arrow anti-missile missile, is a transportable ground-based multimode solid-state phased array radar, capable of predicting impact points of incoming tactical ballistic missiles.
The Green Pine radar's strategic value along the Indian-Pakistani border is reportedly inestimable. "It covers all of Pakistan's military command centers and bases between Islamabad, the capital, and the Indian frontier. The system reportedly provides India with surveillance of Pakistan's nuclear centers and missile sites
