Is there any kind of limit as to the amount of this you can buy or possess in the states? (Unmixed ingredients I mean). That's just 30lb of the stuff in that video. Surely that's got terrorism waiting to happen written all over it?

Why would you come to the terrorism conclusion? There are plenty of other ways and means to make or procure explosives. Oops! Sorry, didn't mean to make you any more paranoid than you already are.

Only if it gets into the hands of terrorists. Makes one wonder why we've opened up the borders to their kind in the US. I guess now that you've gone and said something ... a whole bunch of lawmakers are gonna have to get together and make up a bunch of new laws and take more freedom away.

Look at these good old boys. They could've blown up a school or sumpin' ... but they didn't. It's not in their blood. /sarc

As for the tannerite ... you'd get about the same results with a couple pounds of dynamite. That's not hard to get either.

I'm not being paranoid. If I wanted readily available explosives that I could walk in a shop and buy I'd be taking a long hard look at that stuff. It looks like a lot of fun to me but surely it carries the potential to be used to cause harm?

Sorry I raised the issue

I'm asking out of interest here not because I think it should be banned or anything like that. You can make a bomb easily enough as has been pointed out. My question is can you buy any amount or store any amount you want?

You don't understand it + it scares you = Terrerists?

My avatar is of me on the range setting off explosives in 1992. I was taught how to make all sorts of things go boom by the world's biggest terrorist organization... the US government.

Relax, Francis. Just because you are scared doesn't make it an ied

It's legal and there doesn't seem to be any restrictions on amounts that can ordered.

Here for instance: www.ruralking.com...

Just google it, plenty of info, forums, and recipes for homemade tannerite as well. I did three searches and found out ways to tweak it for better effect. The two components are readily available as with anything else you may need if your twisted enough. Such is the world.

Is there evidence that terrorists have ever used it or acquired it for use? That was a pretty woosy blast for 30 pounds.

Tannerite is made to only explode when it is hit by the speed and force of a bullet, this would make it pretty difficult to use for as weapon of terrorism as it would need a riffled barrel attached to the Tannerite and some sort of contraption(or Rube Goldberg machine)to fire the bullet into the Tannerite and they would have to hope the bullet had enough barrel to travel fast enough to set off the Tannerite,on top of that Tannerite is actually a pretty weak explosive. Also if bought by a terrorist there is a paper trail leading strait to them and what they bought. Basically it would be more effort than it is worth for a terrorist to use Tannerite instead of a more powerful explosive that will achieve their goal than use a lot of Tannerite.

Bombs are not hard to make, using Tannerite would just further complicate the process with a higher chance of the terrorist getting cought before they even make the bomb or bomb might not even work in the first place,Tannerite isn't exactly an everyday thing to buy like fertilizer and other every day items that are used by some to make bombs with it is also more expensive to use before factoring in buying what would be needed to set it off. To sum it more trouble and risk than a terrorist would want

Not tannerite itself, but the components, yes. Tannerite is 95% ammonium nitrate / 5% aluminum powder.
I'm sure those that are informed can name a couple of incidents where ammonium nitrate was involved.

It can be set off with a firecracker. What's expensive about that?

I had a thread on an accident someone had with it right around my neck of the woods. www.abovetopsecret.com...

The link to the news page is not working anymore on my thread. I suppose they get dumped after a couple of years.

There's something you can probably buy near you, add to that, and have a REALLY fun time.

You can transform a pound of tannerite into a pound of fun, going from a weak heaving charge into something with enough brisance to cut steel, with one somewhat common additive.

I'm actually sort of surprised that no one does this, it's taught at 'blowing up people and stuff school' as an improvised explosive.

Having built a few of these devices more than 50 years ago I think these good old boys had some real fun making the video and doing in the Bronco. I'm pretty sure restrictions will be placed on it as soon as the word gets out and some government dude wants to spoil somebody making videos. I did enjoy the video and it reminds me of Adam and Jamie blowing up their cement truck on Mythbusters. My best,
