Lost my mom to emphysema. Also slow and painful. Every year she took in less and less air. Until she just turned grey and withered away.
I don't think makeing it illegal is the answer. We need to help people to not make that choice for themselves.
I started smoking at 15 to be cool on the school bus. I finally decided to quit when all I ever did was cough all day long. I'd wake up to aching lungs. That was at 53. I am now 57. I just stopped. No patches, no gum, no pills. I gained some weight but just enough to fill in some wrinkles. . Now I breathe clear and that happened pretty quickly too. It was four years on New year's day. I never looked back. Never backsliding.
My hair and clothes don't stink. The house doesn't smell like cigs. I even regained the singing voice I had as a kid. Now I belt it out at karaoke night.
If you smoke. Quit. If you don't smoke don't start.

Another meddling politician, a democrat this time sponsored this bill. Why don't they make a law that removes the poison particles from the tobacco. That way people will volunteer to not smoke.

There is not important crusades then to take away the little bit of enjoyment I get in this miserable world.

correct me if im wrong but arent people not fully developed until around 21-24 anyway? why we allow people to partake in addictive substances with an underdeveloped brain is beyond me.

If you are able to be drafted to fight and perhaps die for your country, you aught to be able to smoke in it. I have never been a smoker but am damned tired of Californias new laws.

I agree. Get rid of nicotine 100% across the board. And alcohol. And porn. And fatty food. And sugar. And GMO's. And ...

We should all go back to huts and living free off the land where it was peaceful. But then again, way back then one man killed 25% of the population if you believe the myths.

We live in a society of free choice. I think a person should be at least 25 and a productive member of society in order to vote. I understand that it's a good thing my opinion doesn't matter.

Nicotine is a VERY poorly regulated drug.

Not many people over 20 start smoking.

Most long term smokers started alot younger.

There is a reason for that, if you look deep enough.

IT IS A HIGHLY ADDICTIVE CANCER CAUSING DRUG.

Dont relate smoking to joining the military, drinking alcohol, or any such.

The only people that complain that 18 is fair, are 18 and unders. The rest have matured enough to know smoking sucks, smoking kills, and niccotine is a bastard of a monkey to get off your back.

Well, I certainly hope that the governments has a plan in place to help those who smoke, who are addicted, and who are between the ages of 18 and 20 fight their addiction since they suddenly make it illegal.

Now, these people aren't lifetime smokers, and even though it would be fairly easy, IMO, to get cigarettes when you're 18-20, quitting smoking is hard. It took me a full year to quit (after 12 years of smoking), but if you're going to make some part of a person's lifestyle suddenly ILLEGAL (a part which happens to be very addictive), the government better have a plan in place to help them kick it when they can't get their fix.

You can debate all you want..... and then when you can no longer breathe, and it sounds like critters in your throat.... skip on down to your drug store and get some patches. Two weeks of the most vivid insane dreams you could imagine, a cessation for the need of nicotine, and the rest is down hill. Granted, the first couple days are when you might cheat, but it's entirely up to you. Do you want to spend a hundred to two hundred bucks a month for smokes ?

But if you enjoy them that much, by all means continue and enjoy them. Watch your teenage children set outside of supermarkets and snag the half smoked ones customers put in the sand ashtray outside the store. Watch your kids struggle, and finally buy them patches... or don't...

Oh, and by the way, it's said their cheaper on Injun reservations....

Read the bill and you'll realize that military personnel are exempt to the minimum age. Doesn't that just void your well thought out post.

This thread has nothing to do with Obama. It has to do with Jerry Brown.

Sounds like a States' Rights issue to me. I thought people wanted States to be able to do this?

Only if its something they agree with.

Then point is if you want to use the "you should be able you put what ever you want in your body" line then that has to apply to other things that are illegal for safety. I saw if we have drugs illegal because they are bad for us why not cigs? I would rather see both legal tho.

As someone noted in a post, military personnel are exempt from this bill. I haven't read the bill myself, but I don't think young people should smoke and if anyone young looking asks me for a smoke I say no. Old guys can have some of my tobacco no problem.
If I was my 18 year old self in this time period, I'd be really upset over this. I started young and it was at a time that I could easily buy cigarettes... for whatever reasons.
I am a smoker still and will be the first to say it's a gross nasty habit... as much as I enjoy them.
I just can't seem to get upset about 18-20 year olds not being able to smoke. They will find a way anyhow I'm sure... I was young once too and that didn't stop me from doing things I wasn't supposed to.
What I'm wondering is... what are the penalties going to be? The penalties are what might make me upset. Tobacco doesn't impair ones judgment in my opinion.
