This is pretty good ammunition for Trump (no pun intended). If Clinton is elected, guns will be confiscated. It's now pretty clear.
The air of opportunism at Scalia's death was in pretty poor taste too.

Oh FFS. Seriously? Now we have transference? The NRA and the nuttier part of the GOP (which has now staged a coup and totally taken the party over) have spent the past 8 years screaming that Obama's coming for your guns. Did he? No. So now that 'OMG! Them ebil Dems are comin' fer yer guns' insanity gets transferred over to Clinton???

The site is depressing me these days. So much mindless hate.

Obama failed. It's his biggest regret

Don't be depressed, it's election season when Ideology TRUMPS common sense everytime.

It's not really hate so much as just exasperation at being on the losing end of the spectrum all the time. It brings out the hyperbole warriors in droves.

I think you mean that Obama regrets the fact lunatics can easily get access to guns and then carry out mass shootings, and that Congress doesn't have the balls to stand up to the NRA. Have you seen the number of stories of toddlers getting hold of guns and accidently discharging them? I doubt that the Second Amendment was supposed to cover that. Not that the Second Amendments is being used as anything rather than a cover to sell yet more guns. The original meaning behind it has long since been lost - as you well know. By the way, the USA is the only nation on this planet where such stupidity goes unchecked. I think that Obama, being smart himself, hates the fact that there are so many morons out there.

From the stats I have seen, guns are not a major driver of crime in the US.
It plays a nice political tune for liberals all too willing to dance to though.

I only want to be armed as much as the average criminal, to defend myself and my family.

The government?

they have the firepower, we have the numbers. Well. . . . . we used to have the numbers.

It's all a moot point. The GOP is a unsellable product that the general electorate will not support. The GOP has record low approval ratings and red states keep passing religious freedom bills into law during a election year.

There is also plenty of evidence that once a republican is elected they won't do there job.

Also the GOP isn't motivated to come out to vote, why would they be.

Look at the vote totals from New York.

Look at the vote totals nationwide. You cant make your point with NY and ignore the rest of the country. NY was also a closed primary with a registration cut off 6 months before the election. Even Trumps kids missed the date!

YTD elections : voter counts
REP 23.2m votes
DEM 18.6m votes

I don't think motivation will be issue in the upcoming election.

Clinton's gun control gamble is risky. She's shifted her platform to the left of her own historically neoliberal positions to stay competitive with Sanders and now she's trying to use "gun control" to draw a distinction to Sanders. The problem is that "gun control" is a minefield at best. The majority of Americans — most according to numerous public opinion polls over recent years — support expanded background checks and a somewhat less but still substantial percentage of Americans believe that a major component in an effort to reduce gun related crime should include reforming the mental health system/laws.

When it comes to gun ownership though, even those who don't own guns are far less likely to support stricter gun laws that limit their right to own firearms. There's even a majority opposition to banning "assault weapons" (read scary looking guns) today which is a change in public opinion in the high double digits over just the last 3 years. The upshot is that most people believe we have a right to bear arms but they want less guns in the hands of criminals and the mentally ill persons.

Here on ATS, there's a definitely bias toward Trump and Sanders and so there's not a lot of mention of it but there are moderates who traditionally vote for the GOP who would vote for Clinton over Trump as long as he remains substantially less favorable. Short of a major non-terrorism related mass shooting occurring this summer, "Gun control" threatens to be a wedge issue that could only coalesce support around Trump in the general election, particularly if nebulous rhetoric like this bit from Chelsea continues.

Her best bet would be to either back off "gun control" altogether or get behind a specific measure that has popular support.

That said, it's all just pandering. Presidents can't ban guns. For all the blabbering, what has actually changed during the Obama administration? Gun sale records are continuously broken, the NRA has increased its membership (and therefore its funding) and not much else.

I must have completely blacked out there for a second!
At what point has anyone said that guns will be confiscated?
I would really be interested to see that, seeing as no politician has said that, and certainly not Hillary.

This is the same irrational nonsense we see every time on this debate. People call themselves "responsible gun owners", then absolutely reject any potential for sensible gun laws - and often with this exact same kind of screaming idiocy...

"They be coming to take our GUNZZZZ!!!!!!!11111"

No, they're not, sensible people are demanding sensible laws which allow YOU TO OWN YOUR LEGAL GUN, while PREVENTING CRIMINALS AND THE MENTALLY ILL from getting their dangerous hands on one.

Sensible people realize that guns are not a problem.

Liberals see them as a great evil and will dismantle the 2nd amendment piece by piece, if and when the Supreme Court is corrupted with another liberal.
You act as if such measures have never been implemented before. Didn't Judge Scalia himself provide the casting vote to overturn the DC gun ban that had stood for 30 years?

Yes, and I do seem to recall when Washington DC invoked a complete gun ban - even assembled firearms in the home - at the time there was a huge Democrat majority in both the House and the Senate and some awful liberal had just been elected mayor of D.C.
Anyone who says that Democrats just want to play around with registers and mental health issues relating to gun control is relying on passive acceptance and disregard of history.

Words fail me. Once again we see demonization of 'Liberals' as if the very word is dirty. I shall ignore than and move on to point out that (once again) the Second Amendment refers to a 'well-regulated militia'.
I am not against guns. My wife's cousin lives in Idaho, in a place where bears roam. She has a gun and I know damn well why. Makes sense. Does she have an assault rifle that shoot eleventy billion rounds a minute? No. That would be stupid. She defends herself, she's not out to storm Omaha Beach.
We live in the UK. Ok, we don't have bears here. But neither have we had a major mass shooting for TWENTY-FIVE YEARS. How many happen in the USA every year?
This is what I want: sensible gun laws in the USA that are practical. Let's stop guns falling into the hands of lunatics and criminals. Let's stop maniacs walking into schools with assault rifles and shooting people. Do you have even the faintest idea how the rest of the world views the USA? As a bunch of trigger happy maniacs. My wife is pro-gun but she wants common sense in her country.

Sure doesn't look like words failed you !

Do some research on violent crime and murder. Start with the correlation with population density and poverty and you will quickly realise that the UK and US are completely different and any comparison is spurious... Piers Morgan fell into this trap and embarrassed himself on US National TV.
You will also find that murder rates controlled for these two factors are actually higher in the UK. I have lived in both counties and except for certain pockets of the US, the UK is as or more dangerous.

You are a fine artist with that broad brush.

I'm a lib, and I have enough firepower to blow any idiot that want's to **** with me into tiny little pieces.

Oh, please! I agree with you that they won't. They would either nationalize it or simply mandate that it can only sell to approved government buyers. It's pretty plain that other countries that do not allow their citizens to own and carry their own personal firearms still have arms manufacturing industries. It's just that those industries are strictly for law enforcement and military buyers.
