Dude boo hoo. When I was a working stiff, a "low class" working stiff making $30,000 a year and I had everything I wanted within reason. I was able to save, go out several times a month. Never lacked for clothing or any of the basics. I didn't have kids, and I drove a 3 year old car which made more sense then driving a new one or an old one. And you want us to feel for you? Seriously? Dude, learn to manage your money better. Stop being so greedy and realize how fortunate you are. Poverty is a lack of opportunity for the most part and not a lack of effort.

I bet you ended up having to pay even more taxes for your tax return. I was in grocery store line the other day and I saw this couple paying in food stamps I thought nothing of it until I went outside to see them getting in a 30,000 car. That is where your tax money went bro.

You could always move your business to New Zealand or the Netherlands OP. : )

Taxes suck.. not a shocker there. You make more so you pay more, not that surprising. Get a good accountant? If huge companies can somehow report a loss while earning billions.. I think you can probably make out a bit better than you are. : p

obviously everyone has an opinion. my opinion is this. the government should not have 1 F'ing penny of my money until they prove they use for the good of the people in this country and for the rest of the world. until then, they can continue their path straight to hell.

Top 1% pay 45% of taxes in CA. The top 5th (20% for you math challenged libs) pay 81% of the taxes. Let that sink in for a moment.

In other words, if you have 100 people.... 1 person pays 45% of the taxes. The top 20 pay 81% of the taxes.

Yet all we hear is it isn't enough....

Top 1% Pay 45% of CA Taxes.

Well the top 1% do own 45% of the total wealth.

The richest 1% of the world’s population now owns 50% of its total wealth, according to a report by Credit Suisse.

So? To be in the top 1% of income earners GLOBALLY, you only need to make $32k/yr. Yeah, so in America, if you make more than $32k/yr you are part of the evil 1% in the world! Let that sink in for all you who love to bash the "rich". Starbucks Baristas are part of the elite.

First year kindergarten teacher in the middle of podunk America is part of the 1% elite.

To be part of the top 1% by wealth, you'd need about $770k in net worth. Bar is a bit higher for wealth, but still not that high. Let me put his in perspective.

The typical government / union employee getting a fat pension is most certainly part of the top 1% in WEALTH. If you are getting a pension that pays you like $50k/yr it is like the equivalent of having like $1 million in the bank assuming 5% rate of return. Given rates are so low right now, it really is more like $2 million now.

Top 1% of World

From the same source:

Worldwide, there are 34 million people who have a U.S. dollar net worth of at least $1 million, or 0.7% of the global adult population, and they account for 45% of global wealth.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you are trying to convey.

Simple... most of you are part of the 1% either income wise or wealth and don't even know it.

So, I'm a 1%er making 75k/year? I mean I don't care about paying taxes, it is what it is. The only thing I care about is wasting my tax money on bombing other countries for the benefit of the real .01%ers.

I made just shy of 150k USD in 2015, I claim zero all year and 1 on my taxes, I did have a right off for replacing my roof which got me a 500$ right off.

With all that and living in California, I got back just shy of 500, so without the right off I would have owed about 27$.
I don't know how much you have to make to owe 60k but if you're not living well, you're doing it wrong.

I get by quite well on what I make, and consider myself quite lucky in this day and age. I can't even fathom making enough to owe 60k and not being financially set.

Not really any sympathy from me on this one.

I'm in the 30% bracket and realize that my taxes are what keeps the lights on in government. Roads, schools, and all the various social services require money. Would I like them to be spent better? Yes, but it's my civic duty to pay those taxes and to elect my representatives who decide how the money gets spent with my vote.

Anyone complaining about paying $60k in taxes just needs to spend a bit more time without essential items like power, food, or a roof. Or maybe we could just use the conservative argument against welfare folks; maybe you should live within your means.

That moment when you realize people are never happy regardless of how much they make.

"I'm not rich, most of my money goes to my million dollar home's property taxes that are 10x what you pay, my multi-million dollar savings account even though yours most likely has $2,000, and a college savings fund so my kids can go to whereas no one in your family has ever gone to go college. It's just such a burden to have to pay taxes even though I can afford all of this and then some still".

Not a single tear or f--- was given that day.

Actually, this is all wrong. Income tax is solely theft of labor, which was the whole reason originally for interstate commerce tax and sales tax.

You tax people on profit, not on labor. And profit comes from sales.

We obviously can't work out OPs income based on the information we have, but by way of comparison:

Single taxpayer, no children, under 65 and not blind, taking standard deduction;

$40,000 gross income – $6,300 standard deduction – $4,050 personal exemption = $29,650 taxable income
$9,275 × 10% = $927.50 (taxation of the first income bracket)
$29,650 – $9,275 = $20,375.00 (amount in the second income bracket)
$20,375.00 × 15% = $3,056.25 (taxation of the amount in the second income bracket)
Total income tax is $927.50 + $3,056.25 = $3,983.75 (~9.96% effective tax)

So about 10% if you're earning 40k. By this logic a 61k tax bill would suggest an income in the region of $610,000.

Though the rate increases as you earn more of course. So... ballpark figure, I'd say OP earns around $500,000 a year?

Obviously nobody likes paying taxes, but I'm sure the remaining $439,000 will be a comfort.

But hopefully somebody with better math skills will be along to work it out properly.

What an amazing plan. The better you do in earning an income, taking care of yourself and family...the greater you are punished. The percentage rises the better you do and the harder you work, so you are actually discouraged from doing better while the "poor" are discouraged from trying to do better, learn more or succeed. In fact, the "poor" are given things for free that they will lose if they try harder or work harder.

What a scam and a sad state. The liberals love it though. Nothing like having slaves paid at successful people's expense.

Laborers work hard, people in an office don't, especially those who manage people in an office...
