This is another aircraft project that's NOT military in nature, but I think its...just plain awesome.

Note. He wore a helmet even over water unlike the VP of the jet pack company working with Go Fast. Safety first, folks.

GrumbleTag:

geez. I was going to go down this route, actually. He did EXACTLY what I had in mind. ah well.

After strapping on the backpack of explosive propellant and acknowldging that a parachute wont help below 200 feet; this looks like great fun.

Cant seem to see any details on the jet used and would have thought that the pilot would obstruct the airflow given his position so anyone got the deets??

Might make a good emergency escape platform if it could be programmed to facilitate a stabalised descent as this guy is clearly an expert in balancing on unstable surfaces.

Anyone else think some CGI might be involved here?

Perhaps removing the long PVC hoses that feed water through these "jetpacks" or "hoverboards"?

No.

No CGI.

This is very doable currently with the mini jet engines developed for the RC jet planes. I wasn't kidding about the I-was-going-to-do-that! grumble.

Realistically, with the right gyroscopes and computer/fly-by-wire system in place, you could strap your feet to the thing and so longs as its programmed to stay up right, there's really that should cause it to tip over, for some reason if it did, it would be programmed to get you back upright (hence the strapped in feet).

I fell off a Segway hoverboard last weekend and jammed my big toe. I think the consequences of doing so on this would be more severe.

No! Phage...! Please... You're always correct and on point... But hoverboard????? Nooo! I don't care who calls them hoverboards, those segway things that run on wheels don't hover! (Actually though, gotta say it's nice seeing a post from you, I thought you'd maybe had a hang gliding accident or something)

Anyhoo, on topic, that thing looks like a heck of a fun way to either increase adrenaline or kill you. I wonder how hot those jet's are pumping and at what height above land you would need to be to avoid setting fire to things.

Also, with the slick production I think they might be covering up how loud this thing must be.
If it's over 100db this thing will remain a wonderful curiosity, but if they can somehow manage to keep it at the volume level of a Vespa scooter, then suddenly everyone and their dogs will want one.

It looks awesome - the last one was this:

I think that maybe the next step is to make it more like a Segway with a handle structure (which could also carry fuel) because as Phage pointed out, its ok the board being stable but of you are only strapped in at your ankles, at some point your failing Centre of Gravity will overcome the power of the jet engines to react to the gimbas and its game over.

A crash helmet isnt going to help.

I suppose what gets me down is even the original Segway and the Hoverboard are just slammed and made almost impossible to be in popular use. Didnt they create laws against using Segways in public, we should be embracing it but all we seem to do is create reasons not to use them.

But cool all the same!

For the first time in a while, I agree.

You're only thinking of the hose and water going in, those type of water things also have a crap load of water being pumped out. It would be very good cgi work to go to that level of remove the hose, jets of water, and water surface interactions produced by the downwardly forced water..
It would seem far easier to just green screen that type of scenario surely?

Great invention but surely only ever really for designated recreational areas. I mean can you imagine the haircut you would get if one flew over your head?

I need to figure out how to BUILD one of those! That's fantastic! It's finally here. Now imagine when they improve the efficiency enough to get 8 minutes out of one flight! That's the best thread I've seen on ATS in a long time. That is 100% real. No doubt about it!
