AGREED and when we united stop working and producing and paying taxes in silent protest en masse only then will they sit up and listen. You would need at least 30-40% of the employed to stop for 1-2 months to make a difference. Off the top of my head, the Normans - not the English - invaded Ireland sometime around King Stephen's reign in the 12th century. Nobody had representation then.

The Kingdom of Ireland became one of the three British kingdoms during Tudor times. Problems reconciling the three kingdoms led to the Acts of Union in 1707 and 1800, IIRC. Not much representation going on then either.

After 1800, Irish MPs sat in the House of Commons, just like English, Scottish and Welsh MPs did.

Home Rule became an issue at the end of the 19th century when, again, there was limited suffrage anywhere in Britain. It was also the time when Irish terrorists starting bombing the British mainland - including the London underground. No civil war there.

Home Rule was happened on paper in 1914, prorogued until 1918. It wasn't good enough so the Easter Rising happened. Not so much civil war as an uprising that was put down quite quickly and nothing like 100 years.

However, some people wanted complete independence - that was the Irish Uprising of 1919 to 1922. Three years. The the independent Irish Free State was formed.

That was followed by a year long civil war over what independence actually meant. The British sat at home and watched because it had nothing to do with them because Ireland was independent.

Like you say, it's important to learn from history.

At a tangent, this thread is very informative. I always trust Americans on the internet to tell me what's really happening on my own doorstep. I can't trust my own experience.

The problem I see is that what they are running from is not leaving them... it is popping up in the place they have run to.

Whether anyone within the refugee crowd committed any crime is really a mute point because the terror is now in the "safe Europe".
