I'd have to look into that. It already sparks my interest. I'm always intrigued by the smaller things in life and knowing information that society considers irrelevant. So this is right down my alley and it's a must for me to look into. If anyone finds some other interesting websites about the common behavioral patterns of ants or any such thing. I'd definitely be excited to see it. Thank you for bringing this to my attention and I'll continue to research.

On a side note I do agree with you, there probably was a non-invasive way of doing this--but there's scientific study, and many factors that probably contributed to the decision that we aren't aware of. I'd imagine they have a pretty good reason for doing this, it's just in my preference that it was done as you said, in an non invasive way and or searching for abandoned anthill structures.

Ant farms are extremely interesting. I'd love to have one, seems like a less harmful way of observing the ants patterns and their incredible structures. I might look into getting one assuming I'm not going to be clumsy and it result in me accidentally letting the insects escape.
