It was a democrat named Kennedy that started it.
Actually, to my understanding, Kennedy refused to allow a 'false flag' attack on Americans so the American war machine could blame it on Cuba just to start a war.
So he was shot in the head.
Operation Northwoods
Cubans who never lived or worked in the United States retire to Florida and live off food stamps, Medicaid, and welfare. Some collect and don’t even live here. Miami-Dade is number one in elderly welfare in the nation because of it. Since 2003, more than 329,000 Cuban immigrants arrived in Florida and were eligible for refugee aid. They now make up nine out of 10 foreigners getting refugee services in the state. Another 51,000 just poured in this past year alone and the numbers are growing.
For more than five decades, the U.S. has given Cubans unique immigration status and benefits because they are presumed to be refugees. But they are coming now for welfare and other freebies. Many go back to Cuba and have relatives cash their checks.
More than 51,000 undocumented Cubans entered the United States last year: a dramatic surge over 2014

anti-American rhetoric and Obama says he personally wouldn't disagree with it, I do have a problem.

Isn't the US pretty much the only country embargoing Cuba?
All the European countries trade with it. So far as I know, the Asian countries do, and I doubt anyone is stopping Mexico from trading with it.
So why does the place suck so bad? What exactly is it that we make in the US that is preventing it from flourishing? Last I heard, everyone on this site spends so much time whining about how all those other places manufacture so much more than the US does. So since we don't make anything here, how is our embargo hurting Cuba? Instead, it seems like they have the same disease that Venezuela does, and we don't embargo Venezuela.
Maybe, Castro doesn't want the embargo lifted because if it does lift, then he has no easy devil to blame for the all the woes his people suffer.
