And TomSawyer I believe that was a blatant sign from GOD, and it is pretty AMAZING. I don't know how someone could deny that rare fog! That's just TOO PERFECT for you to get away! It sounds like it must have been easy for you. And to get such a strong propulsion to leave just before you would have experienced something extremely negative that may have traumatized you for life! Even getting a broken arm which ultimately allowed you to have an honorable discharge is synchronistic in my eyes; if you hadn't broken your arm and gone back getting a good job may have been hard. And if you did go back without a broken arm they undoubtedly would have tried to put you right back in the same position.

It's pretty perfect that you went AWOL and ultimately got a Honorable discharge anyway!

Thank you for your response. I was starting to loose my faith in humanity there for a bit. But yeah, you know how they say "you couldn't plan something like that"? It's like God's signature on the whole event. If I as a human, tried to manufacture something like that. It could never compare to the perfectness in God's presentation. That's why to me it is awe inspiring.

Kind of like finding the book Unholy Babylon, in a book store located on a US military post. Prior to the war that this book was documenting the escalation up to. Then on top of that, the fact that I found it. Anyone that knows me, will tell you that I typically don't read books. But I read that one. It's just mind boggling how things just fall into place like magic, when you get out of the way.

The US military serves the corporate machine in trying spread US fascism onto the rest of the world so I am gad you turned your back on them and refused to be intimidated. If others had your guts this world would be a better place. You are the master of your fate, the captain of your soul.

We all misplace our faith in humanity in different ways.

Mine slipped a little bit when I read a story about a guy that couldn't find a job playing musical instruments so he joined an organization that is by it's very definition made to kill people and destroy things. However he justifies it by saying "I was only going to play piano for the killers".

Then when he couldn't play piano he trained with the other soldiers to do the job they were all expected to do as it was peace time and there was no worries in the air. Then "war approached" and he remembered that he was a piano player so he used God as an excuse to abandon his brothers in arms.

He will use fog, music video, and slipping on stairs all as signs from God rather than say what is really happening. He lacked spine and intestinal fortitude to see through the obligations he had made to not only his country but more importantly to the men around him.

He then further exacerbates it by saying after the fact that he was "different" and didn't understand or that his recruiter lied to him and others got to bring their instruments on the bus. Did those others see God in the fog and Bruce Springsteen videos or were they to busy preparing to bring each other home from the hell he abandoned them to?

It doesn't really matter in the end I suppose. The piano player gets to call himself a veteran and claim benefits he didn't earn all while chastising the men and women that actually did earn them. All while sullying the name of the Creator as a shield for cowardice.

Indeed, we all weep for humanity for different reasons.

To each his own, I suppose. My military service was long and honorable. But that's just me.

I think if you go into a steak house and expect a vegan meal, you'll always be disappointed.

I never looked for a job playing instruments before I joined the military. I joined out of high school. As far as playing for the killers is concerned. I may actually go to the VA hospital in the future to play for free, for those same killers. What's your point, or do you even have one?

Actually, I wanted to go AWOL as soon as they denied my transfer into the band for the second time. It was my father that had your argument at that time. "Just do your time and get out." So that's what I decided to do. It was keeping me in the military past the three years that I had signed up for, then trying to force me to kill people, were simply the last straws. If I were the driver for the first sgt., like I had requested, and had been previously. I would have been way more vulnerable than I would have been on an M1A1 tank, that's a fact.

In my opinion, it took more guts going AWOL from a foreign country, where you don't even speak the language, and then abandon your own car at the airport. Then it would have taken to just follow orders and fight that war from an M1A1 tank. We were more scared of the air conditioners crapping out on the tanks, then the "war". It was going to be like shooting ducks in a row, and we all knew it. Especially when you compare the maximum effective range of an M1A1 to T-72's. Just sit back and pick em' off one by one.

1848 tanks X 4 crew members per tank= 7392 tankers total

"a handful were injured", so lets call it 5 for arguments sake

5 divided by 7392= .0007 % chance of being injured in this war as an M1A1 tanker


If we didn't know that this was going to be like shooting ducks in a row. Which the facts clearly state, and were known at that time. Then why in the world would I turn myself back in, after being AWOL just 10 days. I turned myself in, because I knew that this war would not last long enough to justify sending me over to fight after my arm had healed. That's why.

You can make all of he could of/would of statements you want now. The war is over.

Please don't post facts you looked up about a war you ran away from, to argue why you should not have been a coward to begin with.

A fact to add to the mix:
I spent a total of 42 months in various locations in Iraq.
I've seen M1's cut like a hot knife through butter and melted to slag.

I didn't have to go to Wikipedia for that. I didn't ask God to condone any of my personal shortcomings. I dont make excuses for major character flaws and act as though they make me somehow enlightened.

Don't get me wrong. I don't know you and I could not care less. We had lots of guys like you. Every war does. Soldier until it's time to do soldier stuff. When the steel flies they run, or cry, or wet themselves. When it's all over we still invite them to picnics because we understand that not everyone has what it takes (and inside we thank God we are not them).

Believe what you want, just don't slander me, fair enough? You do not know me better than me, so don't act like you do. I am far from scared of a fight. I served in combat arms, not some desk job. I also professionally trained as a bodyguard as well, after I got out. So don't think we are too different, in how willing we are to fight. The difference I see here, is I have the mindset of a bodyguard. I want to protect and preserve life from dangers, not create the dangers.

As far as "and inside we thank God we are not them", I couldn't agree more!
