Hello All,
My first synchronicity, was when I had joined the military to play trumpet and piano in the band. My recruiter lied about how to get into the band, so
I never actually played in the band. Even after passing auditions on the piano and trumpet for the Third Armor Division Band. The band master sent his
letter of request to transfer me, to the Department of the Army. But they refused to transfer me. Claiming it was because I had received a bonus to be
on tanks. So I offered to pay back every penny of the bonus I had received, if they would transfer me. No dice. So I was left an M1A1 tanker, counting
down days.
Then within probably 4 months of my release. The first Persian Gulf Crisis hits. So they put a stop loss policy into place. Which meant I was not
getting out of the military indefinitely. Then I get my orders to deploy to the Persian gulf. I applied for conscientious objector status, being the
son of a minister that didn't believe in killing. That was denied, because it was "during" war time. Then I asked to be a driver for our first sgt.,
or company commander. That was denied as well.
I was the gunner on a tank at this point, and I didn't want to have killing people on my conscious for the rest of my life. I had also found a book in
the book store on our post called Unholy Babylon. I was reading it while we were in the field training. But in that book, I had read about how Saddam
had requested a meeting with April Glaspie, who was our ambassador to Iraq at the time.
When she met with him. He basically told her, look Iraq just got done fighting this 8 year war for the United States against Iran, to stop the Islamic
revolution from spreading across the middle east. Many of our people have died, many of our families are in shambles, and our economy is in shambles
as well because of it.
Now on top of that, Kuwait has been stealing our oil. So we want to invade Kuwait because of that, and get our oil back from them. What is the United
States position on that? April Glaspie told Saddam, that the United States didn't have a position on Iraq invading Kuwait. So Saddam ordered his
troops in, and as a result. The United States wanted to go to war with Iraq, to get them out of Kuwait.
On top of that, I knew the Iraqi soldiers were being coerced onto the battlefield to fight against me, with threats against their families and loved
ones if they didn't do as ordered. Meanwhile I joined an "all volunteer army", and yet I am being forced to go and fight on this battlefield against
these same Iraqis. So yeah, I had a major problem with what the army was trying to force me to do.
So what did I do? While I was out in the field training to go to war. I prayed to God, and I basically said. If you're up there and you exist. Then I
don't think you approve of what they are trying to force me to do here. I don't want to kill soldiers that are being forced by their government to try
and kill me. Especially not over oil, and I don't think that you do either. But the only way out of this that I can see, is for me to go AWOL from the
military. That is a huge step, a huge leap. Once I go down that road, there is no turning back.
But if that's what you really want me to do. If you really want me to go AWOL, so that this can't be forced to happen. Then you need to give me a
serious sign here, and I'm not talking just any sign. This has got to be a slap me in the face, there's no way I could question whether this is a sign
meant for me, kind of sign.
Within a couple of days of asking for it. We were still out in the field training to go to war. I finally got a chance to go to the px, which I think
was the only time I went to it the entire time we were training. So this was not even close to a normal occurrence. The px was basically like a small
convenience store, with a few booths around the edges etc. But it was all by itself in the middle of this giant field/training area.
It's cold outside, so when I walk in. I'm just wanting to sit and relax, and take my gear off etc.. So that's what I do. I started looking around, and
notice that they had European MTV playing on a tv. This also was rare, because I had been in the military right at 3 years, and we had just gotten
cable tv in the barracks that I lived in on post. So them having cable tv in the middle of nowhere, kind of shocked me. So I started watching the
videos, and back to back to back played 3 distinctly anti war songs.
I still remember two of them. Which were When Two Tribes Go To War by Frankie Goes To Hollywood (Which I didn't remember ever hearing before, as I
didn't own any of their music.) The other song was Bruce Springsteen singing War What Is It Good For. But after that happened, I knew that was the
sign that I had requested. I was a musician that had joined the military to play in the band, and there I was being communicated with via music. Anti
war songs, while I'm preparing to fight in a war. So I just looked up and said thank you!
The day I went AWOL. I got up that morning and open up the door to go outside, and you couldn't see more than 20 yards because the fog was so thick.
Which was also rare. I had to fly out of Luxembourg, so as to try and evade detection. Which meant I had to abandon my car at the airport when I left.
Never to see it again. But due to the fog, I had safe passage without getting detected all the way to Luxembourg. Then I flew back to the United
States.
The first day back, I was carrying a very heavy keyboard case over my head down some stairs. The case ended up hitting the wall that was coming down
in front of me, which I couldn't see because it's view was blocked by the length of the case on my head. I got knocked off balance, and tried to put
my foot down on the next stair, but slipped instead. The keyboard case ended up landing on my arm on top of the stairs, and broke it. No joke. I was
so mad! I had gotten from Germany to Luxembourg, to Iceland, then New York, then finally Colorado without being detected. Then first thing that
happens when I get there, is I break my arm! I couldn't understand it.
But when I settled down, is when it dawned on me. If my arm was broken. I would be able to turn myself back in, and they wouldn't be able to ship me
to the middle east and force me to fight as they had planned. So after being AWOL for 10 days, I turned myself in. (It was Christmas time, so I didn't
do it right away.) But when I did, I was told that I was facing 13 years in military prison. For going AWOL during war time.
I was flown back to Germany. But a second Congressional inquiry had been started on my behalf, into my recruiters conduct when I had been recruited,
while all of this was going on. The inquiry came back right before my hearing. As a result I was given 30 days extra duty, 30 restricted to the
barracks etc.. But I ended up getting out of the Army with an Honorable Discharge when all was said and done.
As a result, I don't question signs and synchronicities. I know from experience, that they led and protected me through all of this.
Peace,
TomSawyer
