I just made a bit of a rant about this. I'll paste it here:-

Hmmm.. Honestly would have to respectfully disagree with you here. While it may be 'fun' for some types of images it really is a nightmare for those of us who like to keep a certain image nicely adjusted and set with colours and size etc.

But a long post now places the post count stats technically right in the center now in a longer post, which I find to be very off-putting. We might find a really nice pic to use, but it will now either have to repeat it which looks a 'geocities' era repeating background.

Or, if we want to use a long tall image, it would be good on a long post, but in a shorter post it will now suffer from;
1. Being annoyingly cropped off at a 'standard' background size, making the rest of the image messy and unreadable, a nice mountain scape pic would just show a sky for example.
2. In the mountain scape example scene idea, we get the posts stats right in the middle.


Yeah, maybe a long cartoon - which might be funny only once in a blue moon when somebody posts more than one paragraph... I just am struggling to see where this forced change on end users is of any benefit.

To be honest, I'd even prefer an AD to be jammed under the avatar on longer posts.

I can see the problem, your redesign is trying to tie the boxes together, what else do you put there when there is a long posts?? How about a small box that says "Staff Picks" with a link to some good threads, then if the space can only fit one link, great. 5 links, no problem.

But yeah, to make us have to deal with the box=post length problem with a huge backdrop thing is really getting me triggered... I can see what you are trying but please rethink this decision!

(And while your at it, the down-arrow issue is still a bug bear of mine that all the official mods ignored sadly )

Or, Make the whole name-avatar section kept at the standard size - but in the case of a longer post CENTER it relative to the length of the post. Perhaps have the posters name appear in text only at the top in the case of a very long post, otherwise that would be left blank. This would keep everything consistent and cohesive.

This has been a little unsettling. Change ughhhhh.
Obviously I'm in need of an "avatar intervention" since no one gets mine, ever. I can't see how tiling will improve something gack worthy?

I agree with Gortex, but am too busy gently sobbing under my desk to deal.

Yes it would, just stick your avatar at the top of say a 6000 pixel in height otherwise black image (i used 6000 because i'm extreme )

I always browse in mobile so, I don't see anything and I don't think I even remember what my avatar looks like.

Oh I actually really like that effect lol.

Yeah, kinda, but I want to keep the rest of mine clear. Like Doodles background above me. But I have to have the static house image still, so it needs a clear empty part below the house.

Any idea how to extend the house image with just a clear space below it?

Just use the avatar instead of background image option, that doesn't tile.

Actually just make a completely transparent avatar background 200 wide by 500 long, and use that one multiple times after your original avatar background... and you should get just the single image showing at the top as per usual with the clear backgrounds following/repeating all down the side of your long post.

That might work ?


Edit to add: But I have no idea how to get multiple avatar backgrounds to load/repeat like how others are showing (ie: Sublime, Skeptic, etc).

Hmm, this looks pretty dumb.

I had a feeling it had something to do about the adblocking situation. I see this is still a thing. Last night the page was running slow and got all messed up and I couldn't use any features.

Ahh, but that's where my problem lies. As we know you are not allowed an animated background. Only the avatar. I've made mine look like a fully animated background by careful (read faffing about and swearing) placement, if you look closely there is an edge where the sky and smoke stop. It's an illusion and looks like that smoke is going all the way to the edge, but that part is actually static.

So I need to keep both things going (backdrop and avatar), but add just a clear box below the house background whilst retaining the house part of the image in place still at the top. Can I combine empty pixels onto an image?
















edit to add this here, so you can see the difference between my background and avatar. So I need this repeating bit clear, but still in place at the top if you catch my drift.

No offense to the people running this board, but you turned an elegant work of art into an episode of loony toons. Between the background photos and now repeating tiled avatars, I'm not sure if the site is broken, or this is the direction you decided to take?

Here you go... try this one on for size:

It's the exact same non-animated background avatar, but I've add an extra long amount of transparent space underneath it to give a total length of 1200px long.

It should still work and fit with your animated avatar because it should still sit in the same place that it is right now.




You've actually helped me to brainstorm a possible solution for anyone who doesn't want to extend or repeat or multi-layer their avatar image... and instead just add the avi to an extra long transparent image.

So thanks for that !




Edit to add:

It's possible to make the total avatar background even longer than 1200px if you want to make sure that the top pic doesn't repeat should you ever make a super long post.

SUCCESS!! Cheers Cranial! I'm stuck on a new pc without Photoshop atm, so that was a real help. Seems to work nicely, I wonder if SO can implement that clear section to be auto added to backgrounds without everyone having to add it onto their images.
And then in the member account section just have an option box that says; Tile Background? Yes/No.








Adding more so super long post to see ...........

Oh DAMN! So what do we do now to stop it repeating? Just bigger clear section? I'm sorry but I have to head to bed now Cranial but your help is awesome, I'll just keep things short and concise for the time being!
