Sheesh! That's so many! That's 60 million people added to the job market! Did anyone even read the info about the TPP?

dennismichaellynch.com...

As reported by Center for Immigration Studies, by Steven Camarota: A new analysis of government data from December 2015 indicates that more than 61 million immigrants and their American-born children under age 18 now live in the United States; roughly three-fourths (45.3 million) are legal immigrants and their children. While the national debate has focused on illegal immigration, the enormous impact of immigration is largely the result of those brought in legally.

Wow so we've allowed 45 million legal immigrants?

I'm so torn by this issue on one hand i want to be the open borders utopian paradise but on the other right now in the real world we have a lot of problems to solve.

We definitely need to overhaul the immigration system.

To be honest I am not fully aware of all the nuances of this situation but let me give a perspective from and Australian's point of view.

Over many years in Australia we have been constantly exposed to "boat people" as a grave issue. People seeing their suburbs getting taken over by newly arrived immigrants, fears of terrorism and resentment of the "illegal" nature of their arrival.

And as both sides of government (the 2 big ones) square off over this issue of impending doom to Australia they both share a big dirty secret. They want immigrants. Very very simply the more people you can inject into your country the more growth you can achieve.

As for the immigrants themselves ask yourself if you were in their shoes and you had a chance to improve your families wellbeing wouldn't you take it?

Just a thought.

Immigration is the only reason the US is not having the Japanese problem of negative population growth and a graying population. All those new tax payers are keeping us afloat.

Might want to get some accurate figures from your native American population.

In fact I see the same point for Germany. Sure, the refugees are *strangers.
But they will (a) buy items thus providing business and (b) will grow, will get jobs (yes, they will!), and finally help to sustain the populations number.

This sounds awful?

Well, in 2014 every 2 people in the workforce were providing benefits for one pensioner.
In 2030 there will be far more pensioners in Germany, so ONE person in the workforce will have to pay for 1.5 pensioners!

It is an investment into the future, having a younger population.

It seems you are a bit stuck in the past. I mean, technically, if you want to play that card.. we all came out of Africa according to one theory so everyone not in Africa is an immigrant? Those pesky Europeans, stealing foreign land! And look what they've done to South America, some European countries still own territory there.

But fast forward to our modern world, and the United States is an actual country with borders. While I love history and find it to be a vital topic, I think we should not forget that no one alive today was a settler/had influence over that whole European invasion thing. So today, plain old' Americans are "native American" - the majority are born here and have never lived in another country. They are not immigrants.

Another thing to think about.. if the native americans had been able to say, "no we do not want mass immigration, we will only accept some of you who will fit, not the ones who want to kill us." And the Europeans had respected that, would this have been frowned upon because all immigration = good, no matter the consequences? Or is it only the US who is held to the standard of having to be entirely okay with all immigrants, regardless of the impact? Should Americans accept all immigrants, even if it brings the country down, just because of the sins of the Europeans? Someone suffered in the past, so we should too? Or could we perhaps avoid another such invasion and keep the current natives safe..

By your logic Indians are immigrants as well, since they came from Asia over the Bearing Strait. In fact everybody in Europe is an immigrant too, because anyone who isn't currently living in Mesopotamia is an immigrant.

This is a national borders issue, and the country of the United States of America wasn't founded until 1776.

Yes and look what the results were of those imigrants. That should make you think twice about all those millions of immigrants comming to the west.

I've got an idea.

You could make housing rise in value, become more expensive.

Then everyone would be forced to take out huge mortgages and sub prime loans.

Legal immigration is good for the United States as has been pointed out by other posters. They create more demand which creates more jobs and opportunities.

Shhh. Don't even broach that subject. Americans become very defensive if you do.

It seem's to upset them for some reason.
