Again, not trying to back the officers at all, just looking for the facts--do you have a link that verifies that it is SOP for officers to handcuff somebody if they are shot and determined to be dead?

I meant before. It's called "taking control of the situation"?

give me a sec if you need a document for that one, it won't be hard.

In general, handcuff the subject first and then conduct a thorough search. The search procedure should insure that there are no weapons or foreign objects which could be used to pick the locks (i.e., ball point pen ink cartridges, pins, metal strips, etc.).

I wonder who called the police? So the people in the house felt in danger as she slept?

Her boyfriend called the police, claiming she was drink, suicidal, and had fired the gun in the house. Read the articles for more.

Didn't see it in the link I followed.

Why didn't he get the gun after she fell asleep. Sounds like a screwed up group.

Thank you. This is a little more coherent, and I can see where she might have screwed up, but I have to say, this looks like another case of the thugs over-reacting to the situation, and not taking care of business when they first got there. Like getting her dressed and out of the room, so they could look for the damn gun, and secure the scene.

I do understand why people immediately blame the cops in these situations, because it keeps on happening, people keep dying in questionable scenarios, and it makes all cops look like nothing but publicly funded assassins.

So this looks like another case that, if the cops had not been called, nobody would be dead. Or potentially she might be, if she was actually suicidal.

Seems like people shouldn't call the cops if they want the person they care about to live.

Well, it looks like Sharon is no longer a member here. Her account appears to no longer be active. I believe this is a great loss to our community.

Here's some additional information I found:

1. The boyfriend indicated that the shooting happened in the bedroom. This is also mentioned in the OP. I don't think he would make this statement unless it could be easily backed up with evidence.

Musto said while in police custody he heard several shots and later found the walls of the bedroom they shared riddled with bullets.

2. A neighbor heard the gunshots as well as witnessed the woman on the ground outside of the house.

Another neighbor heard a series of five gunshots followed by a scream.

"There's one shot followed by four shots, then we heard a scream of 'Oh, my God!' He left, was able to get out of the house," Gary Smethers said. "And we saw the police officer standing in the doorway there and she was right in front of him on the ground."

Officers spent Friday using metal detectors to search nearby backyards for bullets and evidence involved in the case.

So the OP indicated that the shooting occurred in the bedroom, but for some reason the cops carried her downstairs. This claim is supported by the eyewitness testimony of the neighbor. Seems to me this was unnecessary, and dangerous to the woman who was just shot.

If the shooting occurred in the bedroom, why were the police using metal detectors to search for evidence outside of the house?

3. The police spent 5 days investigating this shooting, expending 400 work hours in clearing their fellow officers.

According to a statement released Wednesday, the multijurisdictional Officer Involved Shooting Investigation Team spent about 400 hours looking into the case and concluded that Choate did not obey a police command involving a handgun. Two officers fired, killing her.

I believe that if the woman had pointed the gun at the officer, or otherwise threatened them, it would have been in the press release.

Furthermore, in order to account for 400 hours of investigation time, it would have taken 7 cops working 12 hours per day over the weekend to complete the investigation that quickly. I'm not buying it.

Why in the world would any cop let a suicidal drunken woman anywhere near a firearm , let alone tell her to get it .

She should not have had a gun. There is a legal way of self defence. Move to a nice neighborhood.

If not dont own a gun. You are not a security force.

You have no right to defy the law. Who are you?

All we need is a leader strong enough to rid our society of people like this woman. How dare her own a gun. What cops arent doing a good job? Move.

If not its just your lot. Poor people die all the time. Who are you to own a firearm? You are not a cop or a soldier.

You're right, it's not mental gymnastics....it's called facts and reality.

Sharon appears to have a MASSIVE bug up her ass about cops, government, really anything resembling authority...and she appears to be somewhat unstable mentally. She's done a few of these threads, where she posts some biased source, or some wacky stuff, with nothing to back it up, and starts going on about the system, and all this. Last one i was involved with, was an officer-involved shooting, where it had literally JUST happened a couple of hours before, and there were NO facts available yet.....and she decided the cops were at fault.

Cops that take zero risk are zeros. Cops that take extreme risks are heros. I doubt there are any hero cops in the US. Wait until they pull a gun on you AND either point it at you, and you are a definite hero cop. Obviously the cops in the town of the story take zero risk, deserve zero respect, and have zero legitimate authority.

Even if someone pulls a gun on you the right pepper spray and flashlight are more effective than a gun round that doesn't hit the heart, lungs, or brain. Inside a house its a bit stupid to fire a gun in almost any circumstance.

People who abuse their rights should lose them. Cops should not be allowed to have guns as a punishment for killing people who they shouldn't have.

No, they will still shoot, then wreck the place looking for a non existent camera, at least have a hidden panic button to warn the neighbours.

?

I'm confused about your KY comment.

No, I'm not in law enforcement, but I do work with both federal special agents and AUSAs on a daily basis, dealing with court cases and helping reinterpret their raw data into forms that are easily digestible to the jury. But no, I do not have a badge.

Ha...yes, I know why you would handcuff an individual, but it is painfully obvious that you don't realize that you can't always handcuff someone immediately...or sometimes ever.

But the way you made your comment to which I replied, I read it as meaning that they should have handcuffed her even after she had been shot, which is why your comment made no sense to me.

While it's true that there are enough bad cops shown in the media to make those who choose not to realize that, statistically speaking, this is a vast minority of LEOs in this country, I still stand by my philosophy of waiting until all of the evidence is in before making a determination as to whether the LEOs in question acted like "publicly funded assassins."

From what I can see from the boyfriend's description of the 911 call, it's fully understandable that a situation like this, with an apparently drunk, suicidal person with a gun that has already fired off a round in the house, could end the way that it did and be justified.

But again, we still don't really have all of the evidence.

"Oh here it is"?

So was it lost, or just that she didn't understand what they were yelling at her for? She actually pulled it out and said "Oh here it is"?

I know this is tragic, but I can't stop laughing.

Yeah, too bad about the thread, but good on the update here. There's something off about it and as you mentioned if there was anything to it that she threatened them first they'd likely share that in the press release.
