The Sumatera fault runs parallel to the Sunda trench
Yes it was shallow... but it takes a specific type of earthquake to trigger a tsunami and generally something in the 9.0 range.
The Sumatera fault is a lateral fault that rubs against the other, the Sunda trench is a vertical fault with the potential for upward thrust of 15
metres and high energy displacement of sea water where in certain southern regions like Bali would experience similar to far worse destruction and
wave height due to these southern islands being in less than 20 minutes reach of such an event due to the close proximity of the trench to Bali in
particular a popular tourist destination.
I must also mention that most aftershocks following the boxing day tsunami have all been in the northern regions of this trench which means intense
pressure and tension is built up in the south where there is no need of a warning system in the case of Bali as this imminent event which is long
overdue will occur all too quickly and envelope most low lying areas in less than 20 minutes of an earthquake of this magnitude.
