God this is a horrible idea.

Do you mean the pay-to-make-the-ads-go-away thing?

You would not be investing in the site. You would be buying a subscription to stop seeing ads and whatever other perk the site wants to give.

If you do not want to subscribe. You would be able to view the site just as you do now, with ads. Nothing will change for you.

I assume. Just like every similar subscription and membership service. If you get banned, you will not get your money back. In an online game if you have a subscription and get banned you do not get a refund. In a gym, if you get banned, you do not get a refund.

On Xbox live, I pay a yearly fee of 60 dollars to use their services. If I got banned. They would not give me my money back.

By subscribing to something. You do not get a free pass to break the rules of what you are subscribing to. You do not get anything besides whatever the subscription says you get. If you break the rules. That is on the person breaking the rule.

That is why sites and services have terms and conditions. If you have a 50 dollar yearly subscription and a service bans you. Then that is that. You lose out of the money you paid.

At least that is how it is most places.

If it is just to make ads go away. I do not see how that changes anything in the short term. If you don't want to subscribe. The site stays exactly as it is now.

That could change depending on any other perks given. Personally I think no other perks are needed. I think the five dollars a month and fifty dollar a year should be just for no ads. So that nothing is added that non paying members can not access. So that nothing changes at all.

Now long term is another story. Who knows what impact this decision will have on future decisions.

It will blow up in their faces, people will get ideas of grandeur, it will get messy to track, people will get pissed. It won't cover it long term as peoples subscription will taper off very quickly. They will get a good run month one, within 6 it will be minimal.

Leave it at ads, just amp them up... PEOPLE WILL SURVIVE....they see ads on every other website in the world.
They haven't died from seeing them there yet and they won't die from seeing them on ATS.

Actually $2 per month paid yearly is the best way. I chose $10 thinking it was a yearly charge. $24 per year is a little high but if it is faster and add free It may just be worth it.

We're looking at using Stripe to accept payments for our potential subscription plan. They accept bitcoin, and so far looks like also gifted subscriptions (confirming).

The plans would be:

$5 for a single month, or monthly reoccurring.

$50 for a single year, or annual reoccurring.

$250 one-time for a lifetime subscription.

I still feel like there needs to be a logical perk other than a sequestered forum or other walled garden. Working on it.

So much for it being about making up for lost Ad revenue. $1-2 a month would be more than enough cover 10+ people using AdBlock. Now you want $5 a month for Ad Free Version of ATS. No forums on the net is worth $5 a month for Ad free version.

I doubt after all this mess he'll go forward with it anyway. Too much of a headache. Who can blame him. He set up a survey to get an idea of how many people might be interested (I think in response to people complaining) then it's " give us this, give us that, how much money do you make, roll over and show us your tender underbelly." God. The offer was to eliminate ads.

Drama drama drama.

I believe this topic was created in the first place because the members in the other thread kept suggesting it.

$2 a month would cover like 20+ members using AdBlock. Instead ATS wants to rip people off by asking for $5 month for Ad free forums, which is NUTS. The forums won't be any faster if you subscribe or not.

It all depends on how it is implemented. People already have delusions of grandeur on here. As long as the exact site as it is now is always available free with ads. I don't see how much changes.

Now if one of the perks to subscription is special treatment by the mods. Then yes, everything can go down hill from there. No matter how uppity the membership gets. Or how special they think they are for having the extra money to subscribe. If the mods treat everyone the same. Nothing changes.

The site just makes a little more money. Money that will hopefully improve the site.

But I can not tell the future. So who knows what will happen long term. For all I know you are right. Or the site becomes better than ever do to the added income.

ATS should take bets on if they will succeed or not. That's a way to boost revenue.

I would settle for a yearly donation and get add free I would say donate $10 a year and get add free. many will go for it. And it may keep some of the trolls away.

but most have to use an add block on their computers because all the adds slow down the page loading. seem like AD's get the priority over that which you wan to see.

I can't think of any forums perk worth paying $5 a month for. This place is just a internet forums that uses very little bandwidth to view. You know what you can get for $8.33 a month if you pay annually ($100 a year), you can get Amazon Prime. That's a lot of content for the money, you also get Free 2day shipping on prime products.

If ATS is really hurting for money, why does ATS continue to rent expensive Studio in New York City, why pay people to make youtube videos very few people actually care about. ATS is spending ad revenue generated from the forums for other projects. I'm not buying for one second that this place doesn't bring in enough ad revenue to cover hosting and employee's salary to manage the site.

Lets see the books on where the ad revenue is really going.

We don't do any of the things you are stating we do. Why do you think we do? Its utterly false.

What you "think you know" doesn't equate to reality in any way.

sigh...

That would be fine by me too.

But the business side of it,
they could up the ads and offer ad free for a monthly or yearly price and generate income with both ideas.
That would be a win win for ATS as far as generating income goes.

Would it stop people from coming?
I guess that is the real question in my mind.
*ponder*

So is it to just keep ATS alive?
Or is it to gain from ATS?

Does it matter?

*ponders some more*

I have always supported ATS, I'd just hate to see a mess come out of this.
I wish them luck, but trust they consider this option carefully.

I agree. I'd pay to have ads removed and to have rights to my contents: - This is why I haven't been participating.
