Most folks are afraid of things like global conflict, civil war, economies crashing and causing widespread riots, yet they can't turn away from watching the car crash. Even if those cars are traveling in a fairly orderly manner, the risk and thought of the crash is there.
"News" programs and websites depending on traffic to determine how much advertisers are willing to pay them to entertain/inform the great unwashed masses.

If the MSM is talking about it, then it must be imminent! Honestly, if the MSM is talking about it, the sensible course of action is to assume it's not going to happen (as should logic.) There's no global economic collapse imminent, there's no shortage of oil anywhere, there's nobody who possibly has the upper hand anywhere important enough to wage a major war.

I could be wrong, but I've been right on this one since I started telling people they were wrong about the imminence of WW3 about 25 years ago.
