5 people killed after 'massive' avalanche sweeps away 17 Czech skiers in Alps

Holy smokes, this thing must have been ginormous. I am no snow expert, but I'm curious as to how/what may have caused this. Unlike a tsunami, one is safe whilst out in the water.... I CANT imagine being buried in a foot or 12 of snow.....

BERLIN — Police in Austria say five skiers from the Czech Republic have been killed after being buried in a ‘massive’ Alpine avalanche.

Tirol police spokesman Helmut Schuetz said Saturday that two people were also injured after the avalanche struck the Wattener Lizum region, 30 kilometers (20 miles) southeast of Innsbruck.

Schuetz says a total of 17 people were caught in the avalanche that struck shortly before noon.

Tragic,my sympathy from my heart to their loved ones.I always imagine being the parent or loved one to hear the bitter news,when i hear of incidents like these..very very sad.
