As suggested, I sent an email to Jennifer Eigenbrode on Saturday and got an answer today.

She confirms that the article reproduces what she said at the workshop, and that in a few months the science papers will be published and there will be a press conference with more details.

A blinker. A variation in a light spot taken at two different times from the same camera.

What I find interesting is that the "5" is in the center of the photo.
Meaning that was what drew NASA's attention and why we have the photo in the first place.
The only way around this is if the photo has been cropped.
So has it been cropped, or was NASA/JPL photographing the "5"?

I cropped it and highlighted the "5" just to make it easier to see. Even though I manipulated the photo for that purpose, it actually exists. Although it could be a worm fossil of some kinds, it's very likely not much more than a bit of rock that kind of looks like a "5."

A more interesting part of the photo is what's going on in the shadows:

Above the "arrowhead" looks like wire or barbed wire along that rock its on

Looks like a crabs pincer, could be a rock lobster.

Just an interesting thing on this image. Rocks generally don't grow tails.
