Hola good folks of ATS - apparently "Stephen Hawking’s Face Took Over Times Square with This Cryptic Message and No One Knows Why"

A photograph of Stephen Hawking appeared on a group of billboards in Times Square yesterday alongside a cryptic numerical code, and now the Internet is left to decipher what this all means.

The image of the theoretical physicist was displayed on the billboards in New York along with the numbers 48, 16 and 11, before being posted to Imgur and Reddit accompanied by the caption: "No one seemed to take note that Stephen Hawkings face and a mysterious numerical code took over a group of billboards in Times Square this morning. I took a picture. What does it mean?"

Obviously a good old bit of attention seeking but any ideas out there about what the dickens it means?

I can't picture Stephen Hawking being a part of some kind of scam or wasteful silliness so my curiosity is indeed... piqued.

Of course I could totally be wrong and he may like to party in tuxedo tshirts. Who knows?

Someone will figure it out I'm sure! Too bad he's part of it or he could help out a bit. Speed up the process.

I think Hawking is trying to give out some hints based on his theory of connected lottery-multi-verse, ripples in the fabric of odds and probability.

I have no idea but I'm intrigued. He doesn't come across as the type to pull pranks. If you find out more, could you keep us updated, please?

I love these, but I would say the information given is a bit too lacking. My bets going with this being one of several 'messages'

I'm going to play those numbers and if I win, I will buy Mr. Hawking a new speak and spell.

I am only teasing. The man could crush me with one brain cell. But you could be right... maybe he is hinting at odds here. That's the best idea so far at any rate.

Seeing as Stephen Hawking has appeared in quite a few comedic type roles, I think he's ok with a little light hearted humour about his condition. Trust me, it's far more depressing being around people who constantly try and tippy-toe there way around my chair. My family sticks the boot into me any chance they can for a laugh. Heck, even my dog plays chasey with me to get his ball, then runs up about three steps just out of reach and sits there to taunt me!

As for the real reason of these numbers... My best guess would be a countdown to tv special, or perhaps release time of a new scientific paper?

There is the possibility that he didn't do this and someone else hacked his face and the code?? ....but if it was Hawkins then 11-16-48 could be a date ? ( November 16 , 2048) ...or unless your suppose to read the numbers up and down and not left to right...which means 411 and 861 . I don't know...just thinking outside the box !

I've seen a lot of hurr durr powerball comments, a few David Bowie comments, and really nothing of substance. I also kinda doubt this is legit because I haven't seen it anywhere but 4chan or Reddit after I Googled.

I know it's an old meme, but it still amuses me anytime numerology comes up.

Hmmm...

Well, the corresponding elements by number would be Cadmium (48, Cd), Sulfur (16, S), and Sodium (11, Na). Going by atomic weights (and it pains me to round to whole numbers on these...) it's Titanium (48, Ti), Oxygen (16, O), and Boron (11, B).

I'm not really going anywhere with this. It's 3am local time and I'm pretty tired. Just the first thing that came to mind.
