This is developing...he was hit by 3 bullets and it's incredible that he is still alive.
A suspect is in custody...no details on him have been released yet.

‘It’s amazing he’s alive’: Philadelphia police officer shot in car

A Philadelphia police officer is recovering after being shot three times while he was in his patrol car in west Philadelphia on Thursday night, CNN affiliate KYW reported.

The officer was sitting in his car near an intersection when someone fired 13 shots into the driver’s side of the vehicle about 11:30 p.m., KYW reported, citing police.

“Shots fired! … I’m bleeding heavily!” the officer shouts in a recording of his radio call for backup. “I’m bleeding. Get us another unit out here!”

The officer returned fire, striking the alleged shooter, KYW reported. A suspect eventually was arrested and taken to a hospital, according to KYW.

“This guy tried to execute the police officer. The police officer had no idea he was coming,” Ross said. “It’s amazing he’s alive.”

Ross said it appears the officer suffered significant nerve damage.

“Fortunately, he’s awake. He was coherent. He’s OK,” Ross said.

Sources tell Eyewitness News the suspect has given a full confession, saying he did it in the name of Islam.

“When you look at the video, this is one of the scariest things I’ve ever seen,” Commissioner Ross said. “This guy tried to execute the police officer. The police officer had no idea he was coming. It’s amazing he’s alive.”

Wow, crazy. I hope the officer makes a full and speedy recovery.

As for the prick that did it, I hope he survives too so we can find out what made him do this.

The officer was able to return fire...and shot the suspect in the butt as he ran from the car...He was arrested shortly afterwards.

Hartnett was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center with what is believed to be non-life threatening injuries. Despite being shot out, the officer managed to return fire and struck the suspect in the buttocks. He was arrested shortly after attempting to flee on foot.

His motivation IS important. Article doesn't specify he was Muslim...it only states that he confessed that the assassination attempt was done "in the name of Islam"

Not exactly. With the suspect saying he did this for "Islam" I expect people who fear Muslims to use this as fuel for their distrusts of Muslims.

I wonder if it is a BLM nutjob. Philly has a huge population of black muslims. I can see one of the loonies shooting a cop and also repping Islam. Almost like a twofer of grievances...

Funny thing is these same people who say religion is irrelevant are the first to bring up race as a motivation in any other crime.

It sure isn't good pr for the Muslims here in Philly. What we need here is a shooting at a local abortion clinic by an extremist Christian to even things out.
