LIVE: Terrorists attack Pathankot Air Force Base in Punjab, gunfight on

A group of terrorists, believed to be 4-5 in number, attacked the Pathankot Air Force base in Punjab early Saturday morning. Police confirmed that two terrorists have been killed by the armed forces. The encounter is reported to have started around 3:30 am.
According to initial reports, the incident is being linked to the missing car of a Punjab SP on Friday morning.
Meanwhile, authorities said the helicopters and other equipment in the Air base was safe. The entire area has been cordoned off, police said. The attackers had also made calls to Pakistan, police said.
The attack comes days after PM Narendra Modi’s unscheduled visit to Pakistan.
It is the second big terror attack in Punjab within less than a year as last year three militants stormed a police station in Diana Nagar before being eliminated after 12 hour gun battle.

This is a breaking story. A group of four to five gunmen stormed an Indian Air Force Base. Two were killed by a national guard unit, while commandos are fighting the others in a running gun battle.

It depends on what their objectives were. Apparently none of the aircraft were damaged, so they were apparently going after something or someone else.

They're currently holed up in a building fighting with a unit of commandos.

Since it seems they aren't going to get their target, I'd agree. Now if they had gotten their objective, it would be a different story.

Having played GTA i can 100% say with certainty: you and your ragtag group of friends have no hope in trying to storm a military base.

Unless this is just a probing attack to see the defenses. To see the reaction time of the force protecting the airbase. to find the weak spot.

It's interesting that only two terrorist attacks in less than one year, when it is known that Pakistan hold several terrorist training camps.

Perhaps the attack is part of the training.

While I have no knowledge about counter attack / defense strategies, but a handful of terrorists storming an air base and fighting it out of 3 days seems too much

Quite - quotes on the BBC seem to indicate even the local civilians are "embarrassed" that it has taken this long to flush out a handful of gunmen on a heavily fortified Air base. The Indians have even taken to using a gunship, but still the fight continues.

In their defence though, the attackers are reported to be dressed in Indian Military fatigues so I suppose that makes it harder to identify exactly who the gunmen are on a base full of Military peeps.
