In another thread a member claimed that there are only seven different plots to a movie and everything is just a variation on the seven themes.

This reminded me of an old conversation we used to have, name a movie in which the good guy does not win.

Moral victories can be argued.

I seem to remember that it was against the law in the US for a movie in which the bad guy wins to even be made until 1950 something.

We found a couple over the past 20 years but they are not easy to find.

Arlington Road comes to mind, interesting show despite my dislike of Tim Robbins

The Departed, eh, in a sense I suppose.
The Collector... again, kind of.
300... but I say they won.

Hiroshima? Yeah... I'm going to Hell, I know.

I honestly can't think of any, that's weird.

Shane. He dies at the end. Not a very good win from my perspective.

The Godfather films. Michael Corleone is pretty far from a good person.

But could it not be said that the anti hero is the hero of the film?

There are plenty of films were the bad guy is the focus of the story.

Rocky (The first one).

Angel Heart also comes to mind.

And with all the Star Wars talk how about Empire Strikes Back and Revenge of the Sith?

I can't really think of any movies where the good guys don't win... Really, that's what encouraged me to start writing. I wanted to have a story where it seem like there was the typical oooh look there's a good guy! Awww watch the good guy triumph! :O :O NOOOO GOOD GUY WHY!? "Bad" guy takes the day!

I agree!!!

Lord Vader should have gotten to force choke them all to death!!!

Long Live The Sith!!!!

Seriously though, Vader was a badass!!!

Skywalker was a nancy bag of wussy, how did they ever cast him as a hero VS Vader?

Gold star for rocky as the hero does not win the epic battle at the end.

The star wars ones are debateable though as ESB is the middle of a trilogy and ROTS is a prequel where we knew that the good guys would win in the end.

Yea I think for franchisees with a continuing story line, we should judge by the final installment. Sounds fair no??

To a lesser extent you could say both Gladiator and Braveheart as the main characters don't make it through to the credits. I think someone also mentioned 300.
