Exactly what the title says -

A South Florida man died after he accidentally shot himself while demonstrating the correct way to clean a gun during a video chat with a relative, authorities say.

Josmel Herrera, 43, shot himself in the chest at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday and was pronounced dead at Kendall Regional Trauma Center in Miami.

Cops responded to the home after receiving calls about a shot being fired, Miami-Dade detective Marjorie Eloi said in a news release. It is not known if anyone else was in the home at the time of the shooting.

Maybe they should bring in 'common sense' testing before selling guns to people

Accidental discharges happen all the time. Even to law enforcement.

It comes from a lack of training or a lack of respect for the firearm.

I think this was more a case of not unloading the gun before attempting to clean it.

Obviously.

He lacked respect for the firearm.

Well, now we know how NOT to clean it...

Pretty sure the first rule of firearm safety is to check to see if the thing is loaded when you pick it up- and unload it if it shouldn't be...

yep and lacked common sense or proper training as you say, which brings me back to the fact that any idiot can own a gun.

Seems a strange thing to be teaching firearm safety when you know the state of the weapon and then shoot yourself with it...wonder if there was a few beers etc that may of helped.

Probably if they did basic gun safety courses at school ..no shooting just how to make sure a guns loaded etc and how to make it safe as i doubt it would break the 2nd

I 'm half evil so this is funny to me.
WHAT kind of malfunction would one HAVE to sustain in order NOT to clear a gun ?
I agree with another poster,I hope he didn't have kids.

and still, americans need strangers on forums to explain why they should not be aloud to have guns.

It seems the ones that shouldn't have guns are solving the problem in their own way.

We've all accidentally Discharged a firearm before. Usually on a firing line. With the weapon facing down line. But when youre cleaning?

Rule one with a handgun. Eject magazine, pull slide back TWICE to eject anything in the chamber while pointing weapon away from you and people, again twice for safety sake, stick finger into ejection port with slide pulled all the way back and locked to ensure there is no round in the chamber. Then remove slide. There is no excuse for shooting yourself while cleaning a weapon.

Absolutely, they do happen.
The lack of respect for something is a big one. When one gets too comfortable with something, whether it be a pocketknife, a motorcycle or what have you... they will forget basic safety rules that should never be broken.
In this case, the guy broke the most important rule.
Don't point the muzzle at yourself or anything that you don't intend to shoot, especially when you have a round chambered.

Accidents of all kinds are happening all the time. Because nobody and nothing is perfect. Accidental shootings are still going to happen to people who are trying to be safe. Auto accidents are still going to happen to people who are making every effort to drive safely.

First, sad day for the people who loved the guy. RIP sir.

Second, I am a less than a novice when it comes to guns but even I know to check the chamber to see if its loaded before touching anything.

I dont think this happened out of a lack of respect for the tool or what ever. I think its a lack of being awake in general. How could you sleep on your own life? Just dont mess up like that. Once is all it takes.

Dont shoot yourself- dont cut your ears off.
