It shows how ignorant you are about islam.. Muhammad was a false prophet, self made prophet.. a rapist , a lier..a pedophile..a murderer.. what a good role model he is..! I suggest you go and study the hadiths and al tafsirs and read the qu-ran and I think you will change your mind about islam and Muhammad. allah in islam is not the same God as in Christianity. Allah is a moon god..I'm not in your country America but they should not allow this at any schools.. Islam is a cult not a religion ... a reply to: BarefootInWinter

In case nobody else has said it yet I will and this is coming from a polyglot and language focused professional who coincidentally took Islamic studies before this whole mess began and it should be noted that you can really just go as far as agreeing or disagreeing with the learning about and then tracing Arabic script. Because Arabic has more divisions than blazes, internationally what is taught to students is called Modern Standard Arabic instead of Lebanese, Egyptian Arabic, Etc. Modern standard is not what you'll hear in any country although it was derived from the Arabic one would need to read the Koran. Obviously this is because most people learning Arabic as second language are Muslim. Therefore, the stuff you'll find to trace which is more than just a word or two but a whole passage, that stuff gonna be pretty much from the Koran. It could be from MSA Textbooks sure but no copywriting law is gonna make that easy. So truly if the assignment is acceptable as far as writing be happy they picked this and not a crazy verse. Also, I didn't read but the first three words but I'm willinh to guess that this is also what's used as call to prayer. So any country where these kids will travel with an Arabic speaking population or Muslim community is somewhere the kids will hear this which is lastly, the one most recognized chunk of Arabic on earth, and I mean Christians atheists whoever, millions of non Muslims know this sacred saying. So to demonize the fact that the world recognizes the most Arabic saying as something religious is boneheaded and should mean nothing more than "a majority of people who speak this language kids, live lives which are much more intertwined with their faith and most likely their nation practices no separation like the US does.

Teach them ABOUT religion, fine. But teach them religion? Not fine, and also not constitutional. There IS a difference, despite the many attempts made in this thread to conflate these two separare issues.

That's what I've been saying for 20 years now. Teach them ABOUT all religions, or teach them NONE.
Flipping out because your kid was exposed to a few Arabic script figures is ridiculous. You think there aren't millions of parents who want this to become a theocracy?

Just a few posts ago someone said today's kids SHOULD be taught that Islam is horrible and to fear it....

What you don't seem to understand, to great irony, is that almost nobody here thinks children should be 100% insulated from education regarding other religions

Really?

It's an epidemic in this country. You don't have to believe me or take me seriously - doesn't mean I don't know what I'm talking about.

Islam is a unique and the only religion, not only prohibits other religions to be propagated in Muslim territories, but also allows killing of those, who try to convert Muslims to their own faith and those, who leave Islam.

Link

There is Separation of Church and State, period. Check out the link. When this is allowed in Muslim countries then we'll see, but NO just NO. I will pitch a fit too.

Liberals !!!!

It would be more a history of control. As control is what religion is really about.

So you now support teaching Christianity in public schools?

I support teaching about Christianity - how could I not?

I'm always surprised when people don't understand the difference

I also have reservations about the timing of this. It's a pretty good reason for people to stir up some more hate and ignorance. I feel that might seem cynical of me, but I honestly feel like they are pushing that agenda MUCH harder right now.

Or - it's the very best time. What with all that's is happening, Muslim refugees arriving in our country and countries all over the world, the nasty anti-Muslim rhetoric that these kids can't help but hear - how absolutely spot on to teach what Islam really is and show these kids something of the culture

The agenda (assuming there is one) is to promote understanding and inclusion - not hostility

Ignorance is never useful. This is a religious art form - not indoctrination or proselytizing. You can't avoid religious art when you study art history - this is no different

They shutdown an entire school system over this - do you really understand what this means?

Don't know about anyone else, but my country is starting to scare the piss out of me

I would think that even the most hardened conservative would want to learn as much as they could about Islam. Right now we have ISIS members camouflaged as Muslims living in the US. San Bernardino ring any bells?

ISIS and other terrorist outfits are relying on ignorance of Islam in America to spread their brand of fear and terror.

Knowledge isn't a bad thing, imho.

Crap - I agree with you

Can the Apocalypse be far behind?

:-)

The only thing I can disagree with is that there are many conservatives that have steeped themselves in the propaganda version of Islam - and they learn only from each other. They think they're scholars. They believe their version can prove that it's Islam itself that's the problem - not the perversion of the faith that's being used as a tool

This is about this country USA. And what is taught in this country's schools.

Reason for learning the difference between a Democatic Republic and a theocratic government.

Or keep head buried in sand.

We are talking about Public Schools in America which are supposed to be secular?? Yes, Seperation of Church (Religion) and State. Not in grades K-12, college yes, it's an elective.

If we were teaching the New Testament in the classroom of public schools would that be allowed????? Huh? Answer that one.

Liberals are what's wrong with this country. They kow-tow to any ideology these days.

Don't know about anyone else, but my country is starting to scare the piss out of me

You think ^ this scares the piss out of you, try walking around an Islamic country with a Bible or a cross on ...

They don't play by the same rules as LIBERALS do in the West. Nuff said.

If they were that interested in learning, they should visit a Mosque. I think this whole thing is silly. 9 pages? Really?

ISIS is using our ignorance against us. And we're helping them!

Also, I was taught about the art and architecture of mosques as part of my art class - in high school

Your post makes me want to cry

Edit to add - seriously? Are you admitting that you think our ways in the West are superior - because of liberals? Otherwise - if it were up to you - you'd be just like them?

Knowledge is a weapon. Why would anyone want to deliberately disarm anyone? I think there is a difference about learning about a religion and being indoctrinated into it.

No girls in the class were forced to wear head coverings. No prayer was taking place. My first post in this thread called it a tempest in a teapot.

Take a step back and look at it. This isn't a major issue, wouldn't you agree?

so, for the homework....just write.....why don't the muslims obey their own quran....where it says the original Scripture of Moses and the sayings of
Jesus are to be revered...and not to revere the first teachings that are the signs from God is to be a companion of hell.

I'm from Virginia and your portrayal of parents is so far off the mark as to be laughable.
There are plenty of well-educated people here raising families that are no different from those in any other section of the country.
The Virginia of the 1960's really was the "Y'all aint gonna be teachin' no Izlam to mah kids", very redneck and true to many of the old stereotypes.
We have had a large infusion of people from elsewhere who have made it far more cosmopolitan than your simplistic portrayal implies.

We've also had more Presidents to come from Virginia than any other state.
Please don't bash what you don't know, some of us call it home.

I am atheist, major supporter of separation of church and state.

If you're teaching History/Government and some countries are a theocracy --- do you just ignore it?
