(or are we all just falling for the ramped up Republican narrative to knock him down and keep a mainstream candidate as the nominee).

Trump doesn't scare me as much as those that are now supporting him. I seriously doubt he's really some racist bigot. He is, as you said, saying whatever the people want to hear.
And that, right there, is frightening.
It used to be unacceptable to be racially biased, bigoted and xenophobic. You would get ostracized and called out for it in a heartbeat. Now? With Trump on stages nation-wide, people aren't as afraid to let their inner prejudices fly. It's now becoming more and more acceptable to point fingers at ethnic/cultural groups and paint with broad brushes.
The scariest thing? These people have probably always felt this way, they just needed someone famous to say it first so they could feel safe in repeating it.

Like the conditions imposed on post WW1 Germany that would eventually lead them down the path of either extinction or war? Or the fact that the "charismatic leader" actually used western corruption to rise up Germany, but when he did it it was Nazi'ism, when Britain did it, it was "democracy".
Got it.
Knowing the reasons behind the "major factors" shed's a bit more light. Bet you would disagree that Hitler actually tried to use diplomatic methods, but was refused outright. Those Poles sure made a big stir when they amassed their army after finding they have Britain's support. You could even say it started a world war.

You're not alone.
He's not MY choice...but I'm liking how he's able to manipulate and frustrate the media, establishment Republicans...and knee-jerk progressive poop-throwers.

I agree, same thing happening here in Holland, with the likes such as Geert Wilders.
(Far) right winged populists are gaining votes everywhere nowadays.
If we're not careful, this could lead to another repetition of historical events, on the biggest scale yet to society.
What is actually happening is that the chickens of disastrous left-wing socialist's policies of appeasement are coming home to roost. Socialism has had it's day in Europe... it's been an abject failure and it's politicians are going down all over. Americans take notice.

What he is doing is lying to the public. The supporters either don't realize they are being lied to or worse they do.
There is no way to know what he actually stands for except saying anything for a vote.
