If the question is, are people routinely racially profiled in the US and as a result treated negatively, the answer is a resounding yes.

I think the situation can be likened to someone who has been abused for several years. Once they are free from the abuse, they may still exhibit the signs, such as being unwilling (or mentally unable) to move own with their lives. There's more to it, of course, but I think it is important to have some level of understanding.
