It was controversial even at the time, and they only got away with it on the understanding that Alf Garnett's attitudes were being mocked.
There were also more traditional taboos. The story goes that the original scripts had Alf calling his wife a cow. The B.B.C. were not having that. No
lady was going to be a "cow" on their programmes, not even a working-class one.
The production team were determined to find a way around this. Thus was born the iconic insult "You silly old moo!"
