There are many different Buddhist sects. They have different beliefs, different mythologies -- some original, (such as the Pure Land afterlife, a kind of Buddhist Disneyland) but more often drawn from the ambient culture. The idea of different 'heavens' (Thusitha, Nirmanarati, etc) is from the Mahayana tradition and is drawn from an ancient Indian cosmology in which the gods dwell on a vast mountain at the centre of the Universe, in ascending order of holiness and might. Mahayana Buddhism just appropriated that cosmology and replaced the devas and apsaras with buddhas and bodhisattvas.

None of this comes from the Buddha himself, btw. It was added on by followers who couldn't accept Gautama's teaching that salvation is very hard, attainable only by a few and can be found only by renouncing the world and following the life of a monk or hermit.

Popular Buddhism consists partly of efforts to avoid this unpalatable teaching and partly of efforts to supply the kind of mumbo-jumbo -- answered prayers, miracles, divine protection and so on -- that people need from religion but which the Buddha disdained to provide.

Deva is Pali/Sanskrit for 'god'. Apsaras are heavenly beings, asuras are demons. They are no more real than Yahweh and his cherubim and seraphim.

Do you have an image of God? I'm really interested in what people's image of God is? Is it like a human ma in a robe like the Renaissance painters portrayed or a "feeling" ?
