Ancellotti...

Or Gianfranco Zola. He struggled a little at West Ham but he had a # team that played decent football.

I'd go with Carlo if I had the choice though.

As a supporter of a team who just " buys " what they want, i must say your comments come as no surprise.

You would say that wouldn't you.

Name just one team that has won anything of any worth without spending frivolously?

I'll wait.

I did. Nottingham Forest. They have won more European Titles than Chelsea. And spent peanuts in doing so.

Chelsea, Man City and Blackburn had always been mediocre Football Clubs. Then WOW in come mega rich owners and they buy The Title.

Who are you trying to kid.

Yeah you mentioned Nottingham Forest and I already said that comparing football now, to a time when drunks were 18 out of the 22 players on the pitch is not only ludicrous but myopic.

Simple.

Drunk? I haven't got a clue what you are trying to say.

Those " drunks " as you call them still won more European Cups that your beloved Chelsea.

You know exactly what I'm saying you just don't want to accept that during the era Forest reigned football was a joke.

It's 2015...

Name just one team in the last two decades to win anything meaningful without spending?

I'll continue to wait.

You can replace the word " drunks " with today's " Play acting and diving " players of today. Chelsea players being a master at this game.

If they came up against the real " Hard Men " of the past they wouldn't last half a season.

Birmingham City won The Carling Cup on a shoestring in 2011, that got them in Europe.

The irony is when i was a young kid, Chelsea were always an average team
this whole big Chelsea are a big club thing, is really only post 2004

Im not saying they were bottom team, but they were always upper mid card team, till the money came in.

City definatly - they had done nothing for decades till the money came in!

Money controls the game for sure, but it's still about getting a team of players playing as a team, no matter how much you spend. It doesn't guarantee success, just look at Liverpool.

Chelsea certainly had their struggles on the pitch and financially before Mr Abramovich came in and spent like a rich kid in a sweet shop. But they were always entertaining and I remember the days of Dixon and Speedie, they were a great side, attacking at least.

I loved Ruud Gullit! And Zola! remember them?

Ah, then they won nothing for years under Clough.

Man Utd, Liverpool and Arsenal have spent millions since the inception of the EPL.

Look at Leeds Utd, they spent millions and were not managed well. Money is what the game is about nowadays, unfortunately.

I think it would be refreshing for the EPL if a team like West Ham won the title, but it isn't going to happen.

Of course I do, but I have been a Chelsea fan since the 80's.

Chelsea spent big in the 90's with some top quality players being brought in, but they had to be bailed out and were on the verge of going into administration when Abramovich came in.

Any team would love a rich sugar daddy to turn up and buy their club, if they could compete at the top level. Anybody who says different, well I would have trouble believing it.

How can people call for Mourinho's head already? If any other manager won the league they'd keep their job for years, it's been ten games since Jose did and people already want him gone. This is one of the reasons football sucks now, winning means nothing, you get about 2 weeks to celebrate (not that those rent boys celebrated... Ungrateful #s).

Clough retired in n1993.

He won The League Cup in 1989 & 1990.

I would'nt call that " years " in the way you meant it.

chelsea fans are shocking, when he returned he was the messiah and did win the league last season and now it hasn,t gone so well this season its now get rid and this and that shouldn,t have been sacked?

you weren,t saying that when them managers weren,t doing so well either, hes proved himself enough for him to be giving time.

i,m no man utd fan but ferguson is proof you have to stick with a manager, imagine if they had sacked him where man utd would be now?

ferguson got time and developed players and even when it didn,t go too well at the start they stuck with him and as they say the rest is history.

not just chelsea but most clubs should remember that.

I know, we are barely 2 months into the season, and the same master genius who produced the best team in England last year by far -- is now for the axe because of a couple of bad months?

What a horrid spoilt brat fan base. They dont deserve success

I'm a big Brian Clough fan - but to say he didn't spend is disingenuous. First million pound player? Trevor Francis, signed by B. Clough esq.

I don't understand where this notion that past football is rubbish comes from. That Nottingham Forest team would easily compete in today's EPL. And they must be in their sixties now, too.

Or the crazy gang Wimbledon team of the 90s (who were really similar to Crystal Palace today ) always up for a game, and always a party killer, always claiming a top scalp.

Or the Newcastle team of 96 that were at one point 9 points clear, with Asprilla, Ginola, Shearer etc
Or United in the 90s with Cantona, Giggs, Keane etc --

those teams would literally blast the pants off most teams today, maybe get to a semi final in the CL

No it's not.

The Forest side that won The European Cup cost peanuts. Here is the full team.

Tony Woodcock, John Robertson, Viv Anderson where all products of The Forest Youth Team.

Gary Birtles cost £2,000 from Long Eaton

Ian Bowyer cost £30,000 from Leyton Orient

John McGovern cost £50,000 from Leeds United.

Frank Clark cost £80,000 from Newcastle United

Peter Shilton Cost £250,000 from Stoke City

Larry Llyod cost £60,000 from Coventry City

Kenny Burns cost £150,000 from Birmingham City.

Trevor Francis of course £1 million from Birmingham City.

The whole team cost £1,662.000 No other manager could win a European Cup spending so little.
