Biggest elephant killed in Africa for almost 30 years brings back memories of Cecil the lion
Exclusive: German hunter pays nearly £40,000 to shoot one of the largest elephants ever seen in Zimbabwe, while conservationists and safari guides mourn the loss of ‘magnificent’ animal

It is an image that will haunt conservationists: one of Africa’s most majestic creatures lying dead on the ground as a white Western hunter poses proudly by its side.

Barely three months after the shooting of Cecil the lion caused global outrage, a German hunter has risked the wrath of animal lovers once more by shooting dead one of the largest elephants ever seen in Zimbabwe.

Mystery surrounded the identity of the elephant, which was estimated to have been between 40 and 60 years old, but had never been seen before in Zimbabwe’s southern Gonarezhou National Park.

But its tusks, which almost touch the ground in a photograph taken moments after its shooting, confirmed its exceptional nature, weighing a combined 120lb.

It was shot on October 8 in a private hunting concession bordering Gonarezhou by a hunter who paid $60,000 (£39,000) for a permit to land a large bull elephant and was accompanied by a local, experienced professional hunter celebrated by the hunting community for finding his clients large elephants.

The German national, who the hunt’s organisers have refused to name, had travelled to Zimbabwe to conduct a 21-day game hunt including the Big Five of elephants, leopards, lions, buffalo and rhinoceros.

This is insane. This kill was not for food or surviving.. this was for sport and some sort of self love. In history sport like this reflected social status and today it is still the same. It is so sad to see these great creatures killed for this kind of pathetic reasons. I am sure this Elephant was not sick and dying before bullet hit its flesh. There should be major investigation and these cowards should spend some time behind the bars.. and their mug shots should be public too.

Makes me sick

I won't star posts in this thread as I think this is a despicable act - no offence intended; I just find that human beings are always stooping to new lows

Really sad. If he's so proud about it he should publish his name and face, the outcome would be better than sending him behind bars. What an a€€hole.

Poaching is a big problem in Africa. It is estimated that 50 000 elephants die every year just for black market and ivory. Also Poachers last couple of years have been using cyanide to poison these great animals. Just disgusting what happens there.

This is deplorable, there ought to be no permits for hunting, no hunting full stop, unless it is a necessity to feed and there is very little of that. Such a magnificent animal murdered. Shame on the human race.

Mystery surrounded the identity of the elephant

I am sure someone will give him a name before this is all said and done.
Zimbabwe, the same country that issued the license to the 'Cecil the Lion' killer dentist, issued the license for this man to kill the elephant.
I would suggest that people go question the motives of those government officials issuing the licenses if they have problems with wildlife being hunted.
It is government sanctioned hunting. Though the government wanted to extradite the dentist from the US, they admit after the storm calmed down, he did not violate their laws and regulations.

What an absolutely disgusting thing to do .. Words can't describe how angry this makes me.

Poaching becoming a major problem, give me a jeep with a .50cal on top and I'll would quite happily spend the rest of my life roaming around looking for these scum bags ... I'd even do it for free

Grr this has actually ruined my day

Please find, and shame this guy. He is no better than a certain dentist. Elephants are such majestic animals, and suspected to be a lot more intelligent than most other animals.

It saddens me that some humans have this sadistic pleasure in killing animals that pose no threat to them or anyone else.

This should stop and IT IS preventable...

On contrary, we all should star and flag this post, to make sure more people see it.

What gets me is that there probably isn't much sadism. I could understand some assholes wanting to shoot animals if they enjoyed inflicting pain. With these guys, they simply don't give two sh!ts for the life of a sentient creature.

In one article, they mention that this great elephant hadn't been seen before. It's like it's been captured somewhere else, brought in and placed in front of the intrepid *hunter* to kill. I mean, big whoop, the guy can hit the animal equivalent of a barn door. His pride has gotten a boost from killing an elderly elephant...sad bastard.

An animal, which looking at facts, is a lot smarter than a human. If you look to a patriarch in the Animal Kingdom, there is only one, never peace, always fighting for the throne. Always trying to please the simple minded eager of being an animal, its a human facad on a simple minded primate.
Would a matriarch do the same thing, kill for pleasure? Highly unlikely, the society and its foundation is built by a patriarch structure, to support it we need a matriarch.
Enforce it, embrace it and enjoy it.

At least he paid for the hunt rather than poaching it..
I mean come on the only time anything like this gets any publicity is when it is some rich white guy who paid money to hunt. When this happens daily from the true morons who seek to profit from ivory or other trophies no one bats an eye.

It's like the whole "black lives matter" crowd and their reverse racist figure heads who flip out against white on black crime, and then are convinently mute and blind when it comes to black on black violence and gang issues.

Careful if we keep citing the need for intervention then the U.S. machine will roll in Africa full force and democratize the area.

I'm a hunter, I wouldn't want to hunt a giraffe or an elephant. I'll only shoot what I can feed my family. I do believe if someone does it legally they should not be bashed. The locals should Change the laws if they don't like them, prosecute the poachers. Outsiders unfortunately should have no say. You want to make change? Put your money into Zimbabwe so they won't need the hunters money.
