I have just found out that a radio station exists in newcastle that is a community radio station: it is the only community radio station: but it is an asian only radio station. Does anyone else think this is extremely racist and bigoted and unusual since it has a mainly white population? Its called spice fm. How racist can things get when thing like this are allocated by race? Its not even a mostly asian place.

How does that even work? Is it like Christian radio stations? Nobody moans about them.

You can't stop someone who isn't a muslim listening to it, so i wouldn't worry about it.

Well the point is that there is no other community radio. In the uk there isn't really things like community radio stations or public access tv although some tv stations have been given for some universities to control so that their students are guaranteed jobs in the media: and by tv stations I mean regular local tv stations. MADE IN TYNE AND WEAR is one such station. It just seems that if there is only one community radio station it should be for everyone: after all everyone's public money is paying for it.

It isn't just about people being allowed or not allowed to listen to it, it is also the point that it gives one set of people a better chance of getting certain jobs. It is built in bigotry against everyone who isn't asian.

www.spicefm.co.uk...

Spice FM is the vibrant and exciting new radio station to hit the airwaves of Tyneside. Catering for anybody that is interested in Asian and world music and entertainment, views and issues that matter to the community and educational and informative content relavent to the community....check out our schedule of vibrant exciting shows, real radio shows by real people

Sorry missing the only Asian part.

Sounds like you are creating the bigotry because of a possible lack of understanding of what the station is about or who it hires.

Is it?

This is from their profile document on their website

The station is ran operated by the licensee who is Spice Project Ltd which operates under a social enterprise model and on a not for profit basis where all profits are invested back into the organisation.

The whole operation and all the roles are basically fulfilled by non paid volunteers

Seems to me they have advertisers paying some of the bills and a mostly-volunteer staff.

Why don't you go ahead and prove that...

That's generally what ATS is for.

It only asian presenters and it should not even be focused at all on one individual racial groups music when it is the only community station in the area. Everyone's money is paying for it so it should not be about any one racial group. I'll clarify and repeat the statement so you get is smiles EVERYONE'S MONEY IS PAYING FOR IT AND SO IT SHOULD NOT BE ABOUT ANY ONE RACIAL GROUP OR THE MUSIC OF ANY ONE RACIAL GROUP. It is called an Asian radio station and having an asian community radio station is racist when there is only one community station and there is not a totally asian population. In fact the asian population isn't very large there the whole place is mostly white.

Of course anyone is allowed to listen have you even read my posts. But its an asian station and a community asian station is racist when it is the only station in the area. It basically is segregating people by race and deciding who should get started in the media and who isn't. It shows that someone wants to fulfill a racial quota and so wants to disadvantage non asians in the area to fulfill it so that normal radio has the asian quota further down the line by which point there will be too many and they will favour themselves over everyone else.

I never suggested that or otherwise in any way, shape or form.
Have you read my posts?

Are you saying there is only one community station in Newcastle and that its Asian only?
You're being ridiculous, simro.

Just because something uses volunteers does not mean there isn't costs. The company Troma routinely has use all volunteer staff for its low budget films and still used a multi million dollar budget on films like the toxic avenger: although I admit it doesn't look like it.

No actually it's work is done by volunteers, so you aren't paying for nothing unless they're your grants.

Except for NE1FM of course which is another Newcastle community radio station. Or HitMix.

Google is a better source than you apparently.

I am not being ridiculous Britain does not have many community radio stations. It is like our community channel in the uk: literally one channel: is for charities to publicise themselves only and no one else is allowed to send or sell programming to them.

OK so does that mean I should be able to open a community radio station called WHITE BRITISH RADIO, no coloureds, foreigners....?

So do I.

Who cares?

Interested or curious in things Asian?
Then tune in, listen and learn.

If not then simply don't listen, its not hard.

If you're so concerned why not start up your own community radio station informing people about your culture and heritage?
It sure needs some good press at times.

Now if they were spreading a message of hatred I'd be 100% against them but it seems to me they are simply trying to share a bit of information and maybe debunk the odd myth or two.

There are many things to rail against in this country, I don't really think this is one of them.

The official website says they hire from all backgrounds...

And you've yet to prove otherwise.

If you think Newcastle needs a white only community radio do it.
