I've got this pop up thing which won't go away no matter what I do. It comes at different times throughout the day and it's a different message everytime in a big grey box. It's usualy something like "Sarah seeks boy in UK" and you have to write dwon the address, as it's not a link which is strange.

I have used both Noton Anti-virus and all my spyware programmes and I still can't get rid of it.

Does anyone else have this problem? Dou you know how to get rid of it?

Thank you

Mine wasnt nearly as severe as yours, as with mine I just had to update my Apache version, but man, what a headache! it was probably just some little punk A$$ 15 year script kiddy anyhow!

I feel your pain!

I'm sure everyone is wonder what happened over the past two days.

What I know for sure: We were hit with overwhelming traffic.

What I suspect: A possible distributed denial of service attack.

Both of these can look like the other... because a well coordinated DDoS attack typically looks like normal traffic, just heaping hoards of it.

The activity began yesterday at about 8:00 AM when server performance went down, and traffic went up. I immediately became suspicious because in all my time online (a long time), I've never seen traffic spike early monday morning EST!!

this is when the banking indusry was hit by apparently the same virus

Well the weirdest thing is, the ammount of banner impressions, is still 2 to 3 times higher than normal, according to Simon Gray.
Does that virus causes that too? We have no idea

previously i suggested why your site was bombarded by hits
coming from coasttocoast, this past weekend coasttocoast re-broadcasted the interview with Mr Dean of www.beyondzebra.com i suggest, with humility, this is the source of your hits. the virus in your database was a password acquisition virus directed at the banking industry and re-directed at you

There was no virus in our database. What makes you thing anything like that happened?

there is a virus going around that is directed at the banking industry, B of A, Citi Bank, etc.. it creeps in locates accounts and passwords and then moves on. it has been affecting ATM's, internet checking etc... the end result is when you use yor card "access is denied", at least that is the worst end result so far.
probably one of your clients was hacked and the virus followed the trail here
at any rate you can all assume your passwords have been comprimised, especially those of you that are paranoid or in possesion of sensitive knowledge

tut's rumor mill
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
the denial of access seemed a common thread as well as the timing of the two COINCIDENCES

so i thought i would post my two cents, is not that what this is about?

No, not even close.

No virus... even two different database servers.

Who would dos this site?

Well, they didn't leave their names and addresses...

ATS has been tried to hacked several times in it's 6 years it's online...probably by 15 year old script kids...

But it might not even be a dos attack, but an unusual ammount of visitors.

If I was William, I would ask for a salary. What you do for ATS is incredible and you are doing it for free.

Unusually high traffic normally comes from being mentioned on a major site like wired or slashdot but if we can slice down loading times by making some changes then it should settle out if it happens again.

Its way too random to be a DOS...that many random and unique IP's would take ages to do.

Not if you were skilled enough.

its not about skill, i've seen 10 year olds organise a DOS
Its about patience, and generally people who hate you will not wait 6 weeks to gather enough unique ip's, root them, set them up and execute an attack and if they did, they'd go to the trouble of sending you a note to say they owned you.
Its a petty game about being one better than someone else.

You think you've got problems?

I've only just managed to get back online after 48 hours.
I clicked on ATS when the server was down and all of a sudden, my screen went blank.
Then I got a weird error message that I've never seen before (in fact in 18 months of XP, I've never had any error message).
Only thing I could do was restart my system. And guess what? Nothing. Everything was dead. I couldn't even get into DOS.
It's just cost me a bucketload of cash to get the damn thing sorted out.

Now, not being the type to believe that I've been targetted for posting here, I've checked my system and narrowed it down to 4 or 5 program conflicts.
But for a few seconds I was wondering there!!!

Still, at least ATS seems to be OK now. I just hope I can say the same for my PC.

In a way. I scanned one of the "Iraq's most wanted" cards and made my pic look as bad as one of the pics in the card deck on purpose. Otherwise, that's me.

I want one.

My card would have to be the Ace of Spades. That is my favorite card. Other than that I could be a joker, but I don't think it really suits my image. For I usually am pretty serious. I don't like to play games, not when it comes to politics. I don't really know what I would call myself. Can anyone come up with anything???

If William is the "Supreme Skeptic Overlord" what would I be???

Maybe be I could be the "Anal Political and Moral Idealist"

Does that suit me???

Or am I off on that assessment.

I know someone out there has a better title for me.

What do you think???
