ALOHA, Ore. (KOIN) — A woman was killed in an officer-involved shooting in Aloha Friday evening, sheriff’s deputies confirmed.

Deputies responded to a 911 call about an attempted suicide on the 18000 block of Shaw, Washington County Sheriff’s Office said.

Witnesses told KOIN 6 News they heard 5-7 gunshots. A resident of the Patrician Apartment said he saw police pull up around 5 p.m. and heard gunfire about 3 minutes later.

The 55-year-old woman was taken to a local hospital where she later died, Washington County Sheriff’s Office said.

Aloha Woman Killed In Officer-Involved Shooting

Nothing came up in search, apologies if it's up already.

55 year old woman with a freaking knife.

The full story isn't clear just yet, but it always blows my mind when I hear of people getting shot to death by cops while holding a knife.
I understand how stressful these situations can be, and that there isn't always enough time to react calmly when dealing with an aggressor... but c'mon!
Police forces everywhere would do well to implement more non-lethal forms of defense.

Not to derail Adam... the 21 foot rule. 1.5 seconds is all the time one needs with a knife and the officer is in harms way. I am going to save my opinion until further 411 is aval.

Not every LEO has less lethal on their person, or available. Responding to a possible suicidal person given Thursdays events ........

Thanks for sharing.

the 21 foot rule and 1.5 seconds is true for a healthy active male. Somehow I think they could have figured a bit longer for a 55 year old suicidal female ?

I guess she got her wish if it was to die.. RIP

Agreed Sky. Then their is "suicide by cop". Again not to derail subject matter. No matter. Some one lost a mother or daughter that day. Sad all the way around.

Great point. For all we know, it may have been necessary force.
As far as lethality goes, I just wish every armed officer had alternative methods available as readily as their pistols.
There would be so many fewer unnecessary deaths. 'In a perfect world', I suppose.

How did they determine she was suicidal (with a "knife")? They shot her "five to seven times" three minutes after they got there.

About as long as it takes for enough officers to show up, draw their weapons and…

Edit: Okay, rephrasing…

law and order response is "she was brandishing a knife". Others might say, if the shooting was unjustified, they have to say that.

Can say that without any corroborating evidence like lapel or dash cams, eyewitnesses video, forensics.

What is sure is a 55 year old female in the morgue with multiple gunshot wounds.

Agreed. Less lethal WORKS. The stress of the situation on both sides can and often turns bad rapidly. I don't believe any LEO wakes up in the a.m. "desiring" to neutralize another human being. ..

@ Intrptr.. one article mentioned gun shots earlier, so the 5 oh response to the call are most likely prepared for a complicated encounter. I see your point however.

Are these cops so poorly trained and mentally stunted that they can't hit someone in the leg or arm? I mean seriously, if you can't hit a 6" square area at 30 feet, you shouldn't be a cop. My daughter at 5 years old could do better than that at 75 feet with a 9mm browning.

Cheers - Dave

Surprised somebody who has a daughter that can shoot a Browning at 5 years old at 25 yards doesn't understand the concept of center mass shooting.

Curious.

This is where I disagree. I have heard more than one talk about criminals in a way that makes you think they are itching to "neutralize one". Get on a cop forum if you doubt it.

I think the vast majority do not wish to encounter these situations ever, but there are a few just waiting to put a notch in their belt as sad as that is.

That said, there needs to be some serious R&D into an effective, lightweight 'less-than-lethal' that cops would be happy to carry and unload at will on potential threats. It shouldn't be an all or nothing response at there disposal. They have to be on board though.

Under stress, possibly with a woman brandishing a knife running at her? People who say, "shoot'em in the leg" have never been in a life threatening situation involving firearms.

People will say that "it only takes 20 feet with a knife" blah, blah, but NEVER state that the cops put themselves in that position in the first place.

Just like that 13 y/o kid in Ohio playing with a toy gun. Cops pulled right up on him and then claimed they had to shoot him to defend themselves.....because...you...know...they were too close to him.......

Problem is that cops put themselves in these "life threatening positions" 95% of the time.......

I think this is a good example of why security forces should not be deployed to "prevent" suicides.

It is a no win situation and the danger to innocent civilians outweighs any possible assistance that could be offered.

I should clarify that if a person has a weapon and is threatening others, that's not suicide, that's assault.

Surprised somebody who is trained to deal with knife wielders doesn't know to stay far enough away from them so that they don't have to "fear for their life"...........

Curious.

I know it is policy and please no explanation as we all know it.. but some cops do break policy and shoot to wound..probably could of been done in the case of a 55 yr old woman. Some people are robots and do "as programmed" and some just might and have..used their judgement.
Just food for thought as not enough 411 here.
