What is the etiquette on ATS for adding friends?

I have been here for several years, drifting in and out. I had a couple of friends and was looking at the friend option on someone's page who I would like to follow and clicked it to realize I guess it just adds them to my list? Now I am not sure how the "friending" process works here, and probably should have looked into it BEFORE just clicking. (OK I admit I clicked on a couple of people whom I admire) Is it common place to ask people first, or is it a one sided thing where each person can "follow" who they like and therefore it doesn't need to be asked? Any advice would be helpful

I'm not sure of a specific code to it.
I think when you do "friend" someone they will receive a message of some sort saying that you have done it.

I just remember there being some sort of message. You could always U2U the person.

I follow some folks regularly. I just go to the members list and type in their name then I go through their most recent posts.
One member in particular has quite a lengthy "friend" list and would not even notice if I were on there...LOL
I guess to say he would have a substantial following as well. It just is easier for me to look them up...

it depends. If you want to quietly stalk them, then you don't say anything. Just be careful with the heavy breathing.
Otherwise, you can let them know if you want to - I don't think an automated message is sent to them. You can't see who added you as a friend - something you could see in the past.

It's just something personal - i.e. you can see threads on your wall of people you want to "follow". I doubt there are any rules. And this is ATS, so normal society rules don't matter in any case.

Thank you for letting me know. I love this site, and I even love that there is still so much to learn about it and from it

I added you as a friend. Did you receive a message?

It's such an underused function these days. Shame really as it's the best, public way of saying you respect/admire someone. Sending a PM saying something positive and friendly goes down well too.

No I did not receive a message! So I can stalk away, or ask lol. Thanks for the reply and the test

Thank you, funny I am sort of a shyish personal messager. I'm sure I can come up with something intelligent to say, or maybe I'll just stalk

Are you sure? Is the little envelope up at the right of your screen white? Then you have private message(s).

Different from replies in threads which you can't tell you have without clicking the reply Icon.

I got an automated message:

I just added you as a friend

from: tiredoflooking

This is an automated U2U to let you know that I have just added you to my ATS friend list.

Which makes stalking a tad more difficult...

Nope laptop, I do not seem to have the message indicator working or something. I wonder if I somehow have a different set up than you or others...are you on a PC?

It will send a msg, always has best I recall. Guess I'm weird, but I never would feel a code needs to be used. Usually the story goes you like their posts, start u2u, then add as a friend, but if you skip some steps oh well!
