The campus wasn't a gun free zone.
thinkprogress.org...

If you had your ducks in a row you could carry.

Not so fast!

The system still has authority to control its property and facilities and can make and enforce internal policies that ban guns from university classrooms, dormitories and sports stadiums, said Chancellor George Pernsteiner on Tuesday. Some universities, for example, already prohibit firearms in sports arenas as a condition of purchasing a ticket to a sporting event.

The source ThingProgress used to not be totally truthful

Since that is the case, they should embrace that allowance, and not shun it.

Here in Michigan, we live guns. We would may them if we could. Also, it is perfectly legal to carry on any school property with acpl. When is the last time you heard of a school shooting in Michigan?

However, recently there have been carry demonstrations due to all of the 2nd amendment political tension. What do we do? Do we embrace our freedom to carry on campuses? No, the news gets involved, front page headlines are made, and it turns into a state government review of the laws.

This is our problem as a nation. We have a freedom or privilege, but we are too scared to use it, for fear of it being taken away by idiots.

Was it 40% every year or what is the range of that 40%?

How do we make the connection that what people are saying that they youth had everything handed to them means they have no respect for life btw?

I keep hearing people talk about that, the same people that say that are usually the same ones that talk about how violence has been steadily going down for a while now as well.
So which is it, is the generation raising violent people or not?

That being said, you could easily take it to court, having state/federal law trumping private ordinance any day (take labor laws, for instance).

On the other hand, they could still find a hundred other ways to ban you and your Satan cannons from their property

Just out of curiosity, what is Congress supposed to do?

The Congress is supposed to do something if the country is plagued by such an epidemic.

It’s that simple…THEIR ELECTED TO REPOND.

They don’t want to deal with one leg of the problem—guns then fine…do some psychological upgrades or something. More money on psycho research—outreach to people with psychological issues…hearings on violence on TV…studying psychotropic drugs…a holistic approach an integral approach from all angles of some sort.

Instead they have spent millions just to get Hillary Clinton and this congress is criminally negligent in my view

Obama resign?

Why stop with him.

He had Congress in his pocket in 2009 and 2010 didn't he.

All his Congressional supporters still in office from 2009 and 2010 should resign as well.

One problem that stands out right away is that Obama isn't right.

Chicago is the perfect example of that. You cant legislate guns away from criminals. Mayor Jane Byrne passed legislation in 1982 banning hand guns in the city of Chicago. Since the outset of the Chicago handgun ban, the percentage of Chicago murders committed with handguns has averaged about 40% higher than it was before the law took effect. The US supreme court has since declared that law unconstitutional, as it should be.

Guns are not the problem. People with no respect for life are the problem. An entire generation of people who since the day they stopped sucking their mothers teat were given everything they asked for except discipline are the problem.

I agree, we need an answer. But we need a real answer, not more feel-good politics. We need a solution to this problem. Not another useless piece of legislation that serves no purpose other than to give a bunch of overpaid politicians a reason to pat themselves on the back, give themselves a raise, take an extra month off, and have their driver take them home, armed guards in tow, so they can relax after a hard days work doing nothing.

We deserve better than that.

I quote this, because it's worth reading a second time.

It certainly doesn't fit the politically correct narrative, but it does speak truth. Sometimes truth hurts. But it must be spoken.

Well said

Because it shifts the blame?

Guns can't be the blame, it has to be this generation!

Why? Shootings happened before as well.

Truth is a strong word, that means beyond shadow of a doubt.

Fail.

What's the next step?

Obama can pass all the gun laws he likes.

He will never get the guns out of the United States, never.

We The People will never give up our guns period. The only way they will get our guns is to come after us and I can guarantee a blood bath will begin.

The fact is We The People out number the Tyrants.

"TWO and a HALF MILLION violent criminals are stopped each year by armed citizens. Of the 2,500,000 annual self-defense cases using guns, more than 7.7% (192,500) are by women defending themselves against sexual abuse."

How many deaths have we had this year from "mass" shootings?? Because 192,000 woman still have their vaginas unviolated and more then 2.3 million other people lived to tell their story.

Its part of a holistic approach...confronting the issue from several angles including imo putting more police in Chicago..a lot more.

There is something rotten in America...dangerous, sinister...we have to root it out

If we do nothing it's going to get worse

don't you think so?

What 'epidemic' is that ?

Something that .01% of the population does that is already AGAINST the law.

It's ALREADY ILLEGAL to go around shooting someone else.

And we have laws that made 'gun free zomes' that aren't so gun free.

That’s the problem. If people are so massively breaking the law with murdering innocent human beings in society at a high rate for peopel not to see that as a problem is a problem in itself

There an old saying

One is a part of the problem or part of the solution

What side are we on?

It was number of incidents per year that averaged 40% higher after the ban than before. It was actually kind of funny. Byrne had a big press conference when people started saying the law was a bunch of garbage and accomplished nothing. She said to prove the law was effective that she was going to spend a night in an apartment in Cabrini Green, one of the nastiest ghetto slums in the city. Well, to her credit, she did go there one night. But she went with an army of state troopers and hired body guards and still only made it to around midnight when the sound of gunfire was so constant that she was urged to leave for her own safety.

Regarding youth having no respect for life and having everything handed to them, those are two different statements. Society today really does have little respect for life. The younger people are the more that applies. There is no maturity or dignity or courage in their actions for the most part. Of course there are exceptions to every rule and I do not deny that. But in general, I think the youth of today have grown up being very spoiled and with no respect for anything. In my day if you were ten years old and someone caught you trying to break into a vending machine for example, they would grab you by the scruff of the neck, call your parents, and all hell would break loose. In Chicago if you see a kid that looks like he is ten years old trying to break into a vending machine and you try to stop him or tell him not to do it, he will just shoot you. And not even think about it. That is the scary part. It wont bother him the slightest bit.

Many people blame it on the idea that all you have to do to get a gold star is show up, everybody is a winner so don't keep score, etc. All we did was raise a generation of spoiled brats who never learned how to lose. All throughout their education they get gold stars for every single thing they do. Then they are thrust into the real world who doesn't give a crap about them and they get all offended. The problem is, they are surrounded by illegal weapons of all kinds. Not just guns. And they use them with no fear or remorse on a daily basis.
