Maybe Boehner is aware of something serious happening to the country in the very near future and does not want to be president. He's third in line according to the constitution...

From bits and snatches I read around the web, the republican congress is possibly still planning to shut down the government on Sept. 30. He doesn't want to go through that again. I don't know, of course.

kind of sorry to see the guy go, at least he tried to keep a little resemblance of sanity in the house.
as far as the why, don't know...
maybe the pope in some other way caused him to have a conflict between his faith and his position and chose the more honorable way of dealing with it...he stepped down.
maybe he got tired of playing daddy to the bunch of immature kids that seem to have infiltrated the white house.
maybe the fact that he had ties to the ceo of stem express plays into the picture...

maybe he will come back as a dem and kick the republicans ......

personally, I think he just got tired of the current political environment in washington and does't want to be in a position where so much needs to be taken care of and ain't no one budging in an effort to get things done.

......and be left holding the bag. Good on him. Don't blame him a bit. When you have the worst team in the league, it's time to resign as coach. Everyone knows that.

Wonder who they'll put up next?? Cruz? (Lord help us)

The actual results of elections show otherwise. The state elections were dominated by Republicans. The congressional and senate races were won by Republicans AFTER they shut the government down the last time.

This is not good news for the Democrats as the GOP won't have leadership that is willing to bend. I am not voting for conservatives for them to compromise and make friends... I want them to stop the agenda. The problem is Boehner and McConnell are part of the agenda.

It's actually very good news.

The kids are old enough to stay home without a babysitter. If they burn the place down, it won't be Boehner's bad.

How about this: don't vote at all - that will help.

This is very good news for those of us waiting for the implosion of the GOP, which we've seen coming since 2012.....midterms convinced me it would - and it is, indeed, happening.

They are toast. Sorry for what you have to look forward to. It won't be fun. For you.

The people buying into the narrative in this thread on this site blows me away. Politics = theater. Boehner didn't suddenly have a crisis of conscience. He isn't weighed down by the stress. The guy goes home and wallows in his ill gotten gains every night and gets up and takes his marching orders like the rest of them.

I find it odd the ones in support of him here seem to be coming from the left. This shows that he is being replaced by the right because the illusion of democracy is still in place and there is an obvious power struggle among the right. He will be replaced by whomever TPTB deem will read their lines most convincingly in an attempt to maintain control over one of the parties.

Cruz is a SENATOR. Unless he runs for Congress, he can not be elected as Speaker of the House. He is a sitting SENATOR, not a CONGRESSMAN.

Because we're proud of him for having the good sense to QUIT. He finally did something meaningful and worthwhile, and got his act together.

Must have been like trying to herd cats for him. Or hornets.

As I've said, my respect for him was LESS THAN ZERO. Now it's at about a TWO. On a scale of ...... 1 to 100.....or even just 1 to 25.

He did the right thing.

Well, if that happens on Sept. 30th. Won't Boehner still be Speaker?
H's not stepping down until OCT. 30th.

Boehner wouldnt give this up, hes way too entrenched in all this........

They have tried to oust him on a few occasions which had led to intimidation tactics on his part...........

Something is a miss, someone HAS something on him is my bet......

No. What I got is that you don't know the difference between the House and the Senate.

Oh for chrissakes. It was a joke. People switching teams all over the place, ya know, so if they say "Let Cruz be our new speaker, and we won't shut down....."

Never mind.
I know the difference, but thanks for your concern. Good for you. Bet you got an A in civics.

I never liked him very much, but he seemed to be keeping (just barely), the lunatics in the asylum. I think he realized it was no longer possible.

I don't believe he even cares about whether or not the government shuts down, runs or goes to Mars. He and all the other elected officials still get paid. If they don't, they grant themselves special dispensation. The Federal government, military and all the rest could go fly a kite for all they care. Only the president or supreme court can encourage them legally to do something right or wrong.

That said, I believe something else is happening behind the scenes. We may eventually find out or maybe never...

So instead of just admitting you made a mistake, you attack and belittle me. Got it.
