Ok so we have all seen the face on Mars and well i came across this today when looking at the new high resolution photos of Pluto. Now granted, most likely this is a case of Pareidolia, however, it looks interesting and sort of like a skull face, with big teeth i guess. Anyway the anomaly is located in the centre of a crater on the West hand side of the new high res photo, link below. Probably nothing, but thought it looked intriguing, so the floor is open to you guys:

And here is the link to the high res photo where i noticed it: CLICK HERE

In an alternate reality, there are faces on planets looking up and going "I swear there are tiny little heads with these dangly things hangin goff them, floating about on my scalp..."

and that guy is lucky if everyone doesnt remove his planetary status and reclassify him as a satellite instead.

Oo

I can see what you're referring to. but I don't see a face. I see a gas mask. Maybe he cant breath the plutonion atmosphere.

Still say this is the same as when we used to play find the faces in blood spatter forensic scenes on a 'different' website years ago..

Definitely not a crater with other craters on top of it, as found on so many other planets and moons.

It must be the head of a giant frozen humanoid on Pluto.

Lovecraft wrote about beings on Pluto. Maybe his fever dreams were right.
First the Bloop and now Pluto images, I hope the stars aren't right for a while longer...or else Cthulhu might enter the 2016 presidential election in the US!

Either way like Mars, it'll probably take us 20 years to re-image it to prove definitively

My brain interpreted the image area in question as a guy with gas-mask but the neurons were most likely prepped by the title of the thread. Interesting & cool- THANKS!

Yep. We're programmed to find faces:

so with all this talk of Pareidolia, can anyone link me to any scientific studies showing that this is an actual neurological function? as much as i've searched the internet, all i seem to find are more and more people throwing the word around and no actual scientific basis.

Here's a pretty good New York Times article about it from 2007:
FACIAL RECOGNITION PROGRAMMED INTO BRAIN

Maybe you need to be more creative in your search terms.

www.scientificamerican.com...

phenomena.nationalgeographic.com...

www.diss.fu-berlin.de...

www.jneurosci.org...

I looked for 'human tendency to see faces', and those are just a few of the many hits.

If you search through psychology texts, you'll find many studies showing that babies respond very strongly to stimuli arranged to look like a face.

That's what we all are! Babies! The moment you become a planetary scientist and take in account all the various landscape-forming mechanics, the element of randomness, and the human tendency of recognising patterns and giving them significance where there might be none, is when you stop being a baby.
