ATS CHAT??

Back in the day, chat was like what ypperst described I was there. Then again, when people would talk, it was just general chitchat, it was all off topic too. You also had people breaking the T&C all the time thus it was hard to moderate.

Why not have the ATS community download a client of IRC and they can register a username and create their own ATS-roomname here and advertise it somewhere on the forums in the proper place.

You can also use IRC in your web browser, without downloading anything

I use to visit the chat room 3 to 4 times a week along with
the ATS radio shows. So we would all be discussing the ongoing
show. I never saw it go quiet while I was there.

I do miss it & hope it comes back.

I'm guessing it means people who've been on this site for a very long time with a registered account. I don't put much value into it though, I was just repeating what the poster above him said.

WOOF WOOF!!

ATS used flashchat. I was a regular. There was no "groups". It was like any other social avenue. You had people who were always there until they weren't, and people who were new, and people who showed up for special occasions, or whenever they felt like. Few were in there near 24/7.

That thread seemed to be about a few people who for whatever reason were insecure and/or had a bad experience in chat. Nobody was malicious in chat, and there wasn't any more of a grouping than would happen in any other social setting where people either know each other, or they don't. Nobody would ignore someone in particular unless there was reason to. What would happen sometimes is that the few 24/7 types would be off doing things IRL, and a new person would come in, expect chat to be lively, feel they were wronged, and trip out. Then maybe one or two of us would see their msgs after the fact, and wonder what was up with them. That's about it.

The version that used two or three versions before the last one was the best in my book. Features included a view chat option, where people could look in to see if there was action before popping in. Handy to see if a friend was active that you wanted to talk with without being flooded with others. Or was often the case, so you could talk with a mod about something. Another handy feature was that the title of new threads were announced to the room. This allowed for chatters to post to new threads to give them that all important boost to being noticed by others. And from a staff perspective: 86 threads where someone was having a meltdown very quickly.

And there was some fun to be had with the mod tools such as the freeze gun that was used more for group interaction than the punishment tool that was intended. Only because it announced to the room that the person has been frozen and only lasted 60 seconds. And members were free to create their own rooms that would disappear once that room was empty.

There was a specific room for the Live Shows, but it wasn't used often. Exceptions being when a big show would draw a large crowd because each room was capped at 200 people. I think that one show in particular had about 450 people between several rooms discussing the topic at hand.

First off i have to say that i applaud both P3bs and Kapustas input into this thread .
They are absolutely right in what they say, and any insecure member claiming that the "old members" ran the room is not only full of [snip] but are also incredibly self entitled .

Not only is this "treehouse" behaviour absolutely against AboveTopSecret TnCs, but if these horse[snip] claims had any basis in reality the members that were behind it would have been kicked into line .
There were moderators in that room more often then not and if any members did have a argument it was usually sorted out very very quickly .

Any member of this place that feel that they were singled out and roundabout cyber bullied in the chat is nothing but a slandering, immature, self entitled, lying brat .
I would like to know where these co-dependant, socially inept and all round babyish members get the balls to think that the ATS world revolves around them and that we as members should drop everything we are doing to "entertain" them .

If you lack the social abilities to meet new people and get involved in a conversation where you can talk with people of the same, or opposing view on a subject then you shouldn't even be there in the first place .

most people I have met on ATS are very insecure, also the most misunderstood people I have ever met also..

So it does not surprise me having that opinion about chat.. THE only time it got quiet in chat when I wasted my time there before it got stupid in there was when mods came in. Because most times we were having fun chit chattin, when a mod came in it would go quiet not always thou, ahab was a cool mod etc. their was some crazy crap in ats chat thou, I saw people get banned in there over some weird crap that resembled misunderstanding and enforced with the T&C doctrine, just like communism on paper the T&C only looks good on paper on ats if you ask me.. I personally do not care anymore I do not have time for kiddy games in ats chat I work on average 12-15 hours a day with serious responsibility nowadays the stars will never align again so even if some form of chat came back, it will never ever be the same back when chat was entertaining and fun. I met allot of cool people in chat, hell I think people had met in there and fell in love and got married or something also, this was about 6 years ago maybe more folks.. It went downhill fast after a bunch of bullcrap that happened and those that deny that happened are being biased because it did..

Anyhow maybe a new chat after it was taken away for awhile may make for a more smoothly ran chat room I dunno and do not have time for it either. I do think thou the demographic of minds here on ats are susceptible to breaking it. Heck last I checked thou chat had been dead for years. Waste of money, and in the long run ats lost GOOD members over it.

Heh such hate for giving out personal truths. It is not about insecurities, I didn't care about what was going on in chat at the time as it was not related to any real discussion at all (*dances around room and smacks people with a smelly fish). When some unknown came in and asked a real question, they were ignored, not always but still way too much. Now all of this was not a year ago or even 5 years ago, this is when ATS first got chat. It was like yahoo chat or the like at the time I saw it, and there were "groups" there and there is a group forming here too. There are posts from others talking about that sort of thing too, its also against the T&C but can not be proved since it's more of a feel in most cases. There were gangs in the early 9/11 threads way back when (before 2008), then something happened and the ganging up stopped. It does happen in ATS forums and I have seen groups in the chat.

It happens in just about every chat room across the interwebs more or less, some are ok others are just better left alone. Much of the direction a chat room takes is based on its most active chatter and how they treat the unknowns that enter the room. If an unknown enters the room, asks/says something the most active or popular person wants to attack or ridicule, the rest of them jump on untill the person leaves.

It is the reason there are so many lurkers.

A fair observation. And that does happen here on the main boards as well. In doing the Live Shows, we also observed that we didn't get many callers due to people not wanting their voices heard. A side effect of the chatroom was heavy peer pressure for a person to call in if they made the slightest mention of wanting to call in. The genuine congrats on making the call (whether they felt it was a "good caller" or not) actually brought about future hosts. So there was some good experiences all-around as well.

Was the old dog regulars a type of forum gang? Honest opinion yes, but only as a quasi-gang as anyone could join and be accepted in time. Even some truly crazy people... No need for names, but several posters here would know what I am talking about.

Have some been banned over their actions in the chatroom? Yes. Their actions brought it about. Their reactions to staff interaction finalized the impasse. Same things happen on the main boards from time to time as well. I have said it many times and will say it here again, it is very rare for the staff to ban a member because almost always ban themselves. What made chat different from the boards in regards to stricter enforcement of the T&C was that it was a live environment and we could not remove things that others had said. There was always a little buffer of last things said so a hot link to say kiddie porn was going to be visible until that buffer passed. On the boards, that would be gone the instant any staffer saw it.

In the end a few people liked chat, a few people hated it; but most could care less and they never entered. The cost of keeping it versus the benefit to the most members is why it is gone. Same can be said for many things that have come and gone over the years like MATS, PTS, ATSNN, Mutter, star averages and keyword tagging of threads, to name a few.
