Not "justifying it" but this seriously is something that is no different than rush week at other schools.....it is actually a very localized
event.....and a way for them to blow off steam and been going on for so many years it was an 'old tradition' when i was there in the 90's..........The
tradition occurs just a couple of nights a year, and about half the corps will participate at some point. So if you have roughly 2,000 participating
over the course of a couple of nights, having a handful taking it a bit far isn't something too shocking in any other situation.....West Point isn't
your normal institution, you work hard, study hard, and play hard......We had a couple of incidents over the years when i was there of cadets putting
lock boxes in the pillow cases....those cadets were severely punished, shows an extreme lack of judgment, and that is kinda the point of being a
cadet. People make stupid decisions, and that occurs everywhere....but if a cadet purposefully goes out to injure another, they do not have the
decision making qualities to be an Army officer and do not last long at West Point.
Side note, these kids are tough, remember they spend there summers beating the snot out of each other........this event may seem extreme, but compared
to the actual training events......actually pales in comparison.
