No I didn't make up the title, 24 cadets have concussions from a pillow fight that got out of hand?!

The brawl left 24 young cadets with concussions, the West Point academy told the New York Times, after reports that some stuffed their pillows with hard objects.

A total of 30 cadets were injured, and students reported that the list of wounds included one broken leg as well as dislocated shoulders.

They put their helmets into the pillow cases!

Genius.

If it makes them happy, who gives a crap??

FWIW being hit with 5lbs of metal helmet doesn't appeal to me either.

OMG!! LOL!!

I needed a good laugh this morning.

These are are future military. Too bad we couldn't fight all our wars with pillows. (minus the helmets in the pillowcases.)

"Young cadets--" isn't that called hazing?

Nah, it was just a 'pillow fight'.

Not "justifying it" but this seriously is something that is no different than rush week at other schools.....it is actually a very localized event.....and a way for them to blow off steam and been going on for so many years it was an 'old tradition' when i was there in the 90's..........The tradition occurs just a couple of nights a year, and about half the corps will participate at some point. So if you have roughly 2,000 participating over the course of a couple of nights, having a handful taking it a bit far isn't something too shocking in any other situation.....West Point isn't your normal institution, you work hard, study hard, and play hard......We had a couple of incidents over the years when i was there of cadets putting lock boxes in the pillow cases....those cadets were severely punished, shows an extreme lack of judgment, and that is kinda the point of being a cadet. People make stupid decisions, and that occurs everywhere....but if a cadet purposefully goes out to injure another, they do not have the decision making qualities to be an Army officer and do not last long at West Point.

Side note, these kids are tough, remember they spend there summers beating the snot out of each other........this event may seem extreme, but compared to the actual training events......actually pales in comparison.

When I first saw your title I thought: "What the hell kind of pillows did they use?" After reading the article, I see that they're real geniuses. Wow. Just wow. You have to be really smart to think that smacking each other with pillow cases with steel helmets in them is a good idea.

The helmets aren't steel. They are hardened kevlar.

The pillow fight according to my old company XO, is tradition..But hitting people in the face with a helmet is NOT part of this.

The assholes who did this should never be allowed to commission. I don't want idiots like this in my formation.

Thanks for the correction. I saw steel in one of the above comments. Still, it wouldn't feel all that great. At least they didn't put the helmets on and run at the wall as fast as they could head first.

I would be surprised if the people who injured others received their commissions.
