It sucks you won't get paid. I would ask how your ribs are now but I won't. I know you're hurting like hell. Take it easy.

I got a fire extinguisher whacked across my side resulting in two broken ribs (it hurts to breath) and I have to have some time off work because I just can not do the job at the moment so I asked If I will be paid seeing the incident happened at work...nope I have been told I have to take the service user who hit me to court to sue. (checked my contract and my boss is right).
So I checked up on this and even If I win the service user doesn't have to pay a penny because he has not got the capacity to understand what he has done.
So maybe two weeks off work without pay but statutory sick pay....
So again my job will cause me to get deeper in debt just to get by.
I love my job but times like this I think I should just go and stack shelves because I wouldn't get the stress and the pay would be better.....
Rant over gonna show you all some pics of Jake the Cat in my next thread.

Is this a new thread? Didn't you have this happen before?
Man... at least you get SSP I suppose - oh well.

Hope you feel better mate.

I feel you...to a point. Being a therapist and emergency diagnostician/assessor, I pretty much see two types of people

1. People who are faking it for secondary gain...and this is a lot sadly
2. People who are very acutely ill or undergoing an exacerbation of a behavioral or social disorder. I understand and have been taken out a few times.

But that is where it stops. We emergency diagnosticians always have an ER worth of people to back us up. I only worked briefly in a residential and I can't do it...I admit it

First off...I hope your ribs are ok.

Second...bless you for all you do...so few people can do the things you do daily...either because of fear or anger....I am always way more afraid of those who get angry. I get it...the spectrum is usually socially awkward but can be dangerous in a flash....but folks like you have an enduring caring and understanding that I even wish I could live up to..bless you again

Third...even here in the states I know your pain...our local residential fights tooth and nail to make sure they never pay you a dime if you get injured. They even have a clause that if you car gets damaged they are no-fault. And I know what you mean...it isn't right but several of these residentials and LD's will "find" a way to "discover" that you are a bad worker if you try to care for yourself

I don't know UK mental health and protection law...but I wish you the best

Hi Boymonkey, surely if he has used the fire extinguisher before shouldn't that have been part of his risk assessment? Once used as a weapon, as you say, as he has done, that must of been in a report on his risk to injure. If not then they are negligent in their working practise.

Oh there is but it is one of those things we have to think about. The chance he does it v his rights to live in a care home and not an institution.
We have to have the extinguishers in the home obviously and accessible.
We have talked about it many times to come up with solutions and I do consider it just a blip.
Tbh he has grabbed many things in his home and used them as missiles and weapons but we want the home to feel like a home and not a ward or hospital.

It is in his care plan what to do but like I said mistakes were made. People froze and I got injured as a result.
But I don't blaim the two who did, it happens we are only human.

There are surely other jobs you can do that Still helps people and that you can still have a positive impact on your community - nobody needs to get beat up on regularly.
It's clearly not the job for you - move on and you still affect change and make a difference.

Being American, sorry - no experiences with or helpful knowledge of UK laws in this area.

Still posting, however, to show some moral support for the work that you do! Reading where you posted that you have been offered higher paying jobs, but declined out of loyalty to your clients was awesome! Let me know that there are still people out there who have their values in a place other than just the endless pursuit of wealth.

Sorry about your ribs. I've broken a few of mine over the years and it's not a fun sort of pain at all... in the same class as toothaches and headaches - pain that is really hard to ignore.

I hope you rebound and heal quickly!

No unfortunately ATS can not afford my memoirs I have just heard since my recent announcement that I'm writing my memoirs (last post) that six book publishers are fighting over the book deal and Paramount have just offered a 7 figure sum for the movie rights...
With johnny Depp rumored in the lead role.
