So anyway I got a text from my sister yesterday and this is what it said.

“Did you see the video?”

Of course I knew the video to which she was referring but I decided to play the game.
It is not unusual for her to send a text that requires a response. Annoying at times but she is my sister and I love her.

“What video?” I replied.

Her reply included a summary of the shooting of Alison Parker and Adam Ward.

She also included the events following the shooting and the suicide of the killer as if I live in a cave and must be completely oblivious.

I replied that I had not watched the video nor do I wish to view any video that contains footage of innocent people being murdered.
She was offended. (I could tell.)

Why would a person want to view a murder?

I don’t think I’m better or worse than any person who watched the video.

I once viewed a video from Syria which showed ISIS members throwing people off of a four story building. Watching the video was a mistake. I wish I could forget. The video was very graphic.

Sometimes we are curious….but death should remain a mystery.

Did you watch the video?
How do you feel about the subject?

RIP Alison Parker
RIP Adam Ward

I think this belongs in the rant forum. No.

Maybe. Is this a rant?

I was asking a question.

A great part of the world is still shrouded in the most horrible darkness. Although such events burn my soul with pure rage, I do not ignore records of such dark events, the reason is that I do not want to get an incomplete view of the world. To evolve, light must know about darkness.

Yes I watched the videos.

I felt pretty awful and have seen worse too.
I think because we're so used to violence as a society perhaps we have become kind of numb to this level of violence and often people find it hard to distinguish between real life and movie/video game violence... some of the comments in the main thread about this were just unbelievable and kind of shows how desensitised some people are.
It still shocked me and it was very sad and my heart goes out to those families.

What?
I wonder is why would you or anyone feel the need to watch a person being shot / killed?

I love graphic video games and I'm a huge fan of horror movies but they are pretend.

Watching a video of a person dying is to me morbid.

When I was 15, my friend and I got his older sister to rent 2 "Faces of Death" movies. I think it was "Best of" and "Classic". We both kinda regretted it. Ever since then, I have no more morbid curiosity about such things. It's not that I can't handle it, I just don't need to see it.

I understand what swanne says but I feel I already understand that form of darkness, and visual displays arent going to help me understand or acknowledge its existence any more than I already do. Even if I do need to see it, every now and then I come across something by accident. Although I certainly do not judge others for choices they make which do no harm to anyone or anything.

How was I rude or "desensitised"?

I thought I was generally respectful.

At least I don't watch a murder. (or post a murder video.)

Right.

It is what it is.

If you want to see then look.

Some things you cannot unsee.

Not sure what the "what?" is about... you stated in your OP you watched an ISIS video.

Curiosity? Inquisitive nature... wanting to verify the incident for myself.
Also you don't see anyone being killed in either video.
It's very unsettling but that's mainly because of the nature and POV of the footage.

Me too and I'm very much able to separate the two.... fiction and reality.
And yes it's very morbid but I suppose we're always curious.... you watched a video of people being killed right?

Sure I watched a video of people being killed. I regret watching the video.

I was asking a question.

Did you feel the need to watch two people be murdered?

Sure.

I feel fine.

I guess you removed something from your post.

Take care. (I do not forget.)

Maybe I've been desensitized. Not by video games or movies but by things I've actually seen with my own eyes (family member suicide). I watched the videos and they didn't really effect me beyond anger. I wasn't appalled, shocked, grossed out, nothing.

People are going to watch what they want to watch. The person who posted the vide is the one who concerns me.

Right the people who post this nonsense are the ones to blame.

My point is just because it is available doesn't mean you need to or should watch a video.

Bye.

If I made a mistake I apologize. (a mistake made by 'highfromphoenix' is extremely unlikely.)
