Two journalists killed in shooting during live newscast at Smith Mountain Lake

That video was strange. It seems as though the shooter went out of his way to try and get the attention of the female reporter. Even raising his gun, holding it for a second or two, then lowering it and moving around to reposition himself. I suppose he could have also been second guessing himself, but to me it all looked like he was trying to be acknowledged before he began firing.

Looks like he sued for racism at some point.

Wow. My in laws live right near where I81 and I66 meet... I'm hoping the cops apprehend this sick $#@! soon.

Wonder if he's headed towards Northern VA - I used to live up there and it is so crowded with urban sprawl, tons of people, and tons of tourists....

Scary to think what he could do next...

I'm kind of surprised at people asking "how did nobody notice him?"

The vast majority of people out there have little to no situational awareness. How many times are you reading something and don't hear somebody say your name? How many times are you working on something and don't notice somebody walk into your office?

The cameraman was completely blindsided. The shooter was well outside the reporter's peripheral vision. The interviewee is looking at the reporter and probably isn't at all used to being on TV, so she's making an effort to maintain eye contact and all that.

It really doesn't surprise me at all that he was that close to them. It's not as if he snuck up on a bunch of Rangers. He blindsided some civilians, all three of whom were actively engaged in doing something.

To me it looked like he was waiting for the camera to be back on the reporter. He wanted the killing to be shown live.

He was standing less than 3 feet away from the reporter and the interviewee, I'm so shocked they didn't see him.

Guess it doesn't matter. At that range they we're already dead.

He must have been completely out of his mind to do this.

I wonder what his motives were.

You're absolutely right...it's just, viewing it from his perspective, it seems obvious.

The alternative is being hyper-aware...which would make anyone bonkers.

The Twitter posts he made, before posting the videos, said that the female had made racist comments before, and that the cameraman had filed a complaint after working one job with the suspected shooter.

I left the tab open when I clicked on your link so I still have it open. Just read all of that.

Seems odd for him to still hold a grudge against them if he was fired a year ago.

From what I saw, it appeared that he hit the reporter with the second shot, in the torso or left arm.

Just saw a VA news tweet that somebody claiming to be the shooter sent a 23 page fax to the news station (the one the reporter and cameraman worked for) overnight.

Sounds like this guy had a serious screw loose....
