I mention this because Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter from Captain America) has expressed interest in being Doctor Who. This got me thinking. We could have a woman in the role, or we have a black doctor. Or a black woman in the role, that could work. Richard Ayoade (hope its spelt right) would make a good doctor, slightly strange but aware of what's going on.

A pygmy albino midget clown coloured african aborigine with red hair and freckles.

since we're just pulling random things out to stick in the who slot. Hell, lets have a dog as the doctor and a human running around sticking out his antenna and going "Yes mistress!"

Oo

Or we could stick with a white guy because that's what the character is. I had the same discussion with friend about the next Bond. He suggested black actors which I took exception to. The character is supposed to be a white man, not black. Not a woman, but a man. It's simple as that.

To be fair, I'm not a Doctor Who fan, so I don't know how important this would be for fans. In the case of James Bond, if it were to be played by a black, asian, indian, etc., he would cease to be James Bond for me.

Neither. Not every character has to be black or a woman.

If you want a black character watch Luther.

But The Doctor can just regenerate into a new body, so absolutely no reason he can't be black, chinese, woman etc!
Richard Ayoade would be a hoot op, I'm with you there!
I'm also hoping that Maisie(?) (Ayra from Game of Thrones) will be the doctors next companion, but as a child version of Clara.

exactly
i agree with not changing characters around to attract more attention from specific demographics but dr. who regenerates in a new body fairly often
and there are black time lords
theres nothing saying he cant regenerate into a black body (though it does seem fairly clear from what we know that gender remains constant)

theres also nothing saying bond cant be a black man its a code name
the agent using the code name changes all the time

these characters do not have a permanent physical form like most so it doesnt really change anything to have them played by a different race

so which should come first?.......hmmm.......mmmm.... tough call....im going to have to say......

i dont care which or if they ever do it at all

Either would be fine with me, Joanna Lumley did a pretty amusing job of it...

Hell, why not both at once!

Gender and skin tone inclusive! In fact, put me down in the same camp as sn0rch there!

That's quite false. Bond is a guy, not a code name. Multiple movies/actors, all playing the same guy.

At the end of Skyfall, Bond takes the battle with supervillain Silva to his own secret lair: the family mansion in the Scottish highlands (called Skyfall). There we briefly see the family cemetary, where we see the headstones of his parents, Andrew Bond and Monique Delacroix Bond. And so it is established, fully and once and for all, that James Bond is actually a guy named James Bond. It is not a name that is conferred by MI6, it is not a secret identity. It is simply a #tily-hidden actual identity. All of the previous James Bonds were definitely the same guy, and all future post-Craig Bonds will still be the same guy.

The person who plays Doctor Who will be who is able to keep the franchise going.

However, in principle - due to the regeneration of the Doctor - I think it would be more likely if it was a "he" rather than a "she".

Oh god, the inner nerd in me is about to explode in nerdisms.

It was once pointed out in DW 70's-80's period that a male time lord can only become female if they kill themselves to regenerate, wish I could remember the episodes (used to watch them with my brother for days on end)

As for skin colour etc, thats random, doesnt have to be always white.

Ninth doctor (eccleston) "I might have two heads or no head"

On a side note, Matt Smiths final lines are burned into my soul as one of the best written final speeches at is seemed more to be "I enjoyed playing the roll of the doctor".

He is the best major role model for little boys, he solves problems with his brain and doesn't use force unless absolutely necessary. Should not be a woman. Why take it away from a generation of little boys?
Sure, he regenerates, but the doctor will always be David Tennant to me and a million others because, well, you never forget your first doctor.

Working in Cardiff Bay I see Peter Capaldi walking past the Office quite requently. He even signed a huge poster for my very ill Stepdaughter bless Him.

If I'm quick enough next time he passes I'll try and ask Him His opinion

You're right, a Doctor could even be a kid - anyone talented enough to carry the role. No matter what the nags and critics say, the writers will continue to choose their actors because they want them. It'd be a shame if they had to write a list of demographics and tick them all off as each season passes.

I've always been a fan of Capaldi and just didn't like the dude as Doctor. Skipped the whole season. Whatever the creators do will always leave some people unhappy. In contrast, my favourite companion was Freema Agyeman. Not because she was black, but because she was a good actor, a strong character and smoking hot. Others didn't like her.

Neither. The character has been a Caucasian English guy since it's inception. I really get tired of this PC/"bring balance to the force" bs. Like in Fantastic 4, the newest one... Johnny Blaze has never been black and there's no reason to change that. How many times have you gotten used to a character in a movie and the next thing you know it's a different actor in the sequel? Yeah, I don't have enough fingers and toes to tally that one up.

It would be a good thing to have one of these or both at once. I think it would be very refreshing and might recruit new fans.

It is not a crazy idea. Imagine someone like Whoopi Goldberg in that role? She would be amazing and totally suited. Haha, or a darker slant on the role with Grace Jones, wow. I reckon Lenny Henry (British comedian) could achieve a Tom Baker style Doctor character, not to mention Craig Charles bringing his own zazz. An older Craig might bring an interesting slant to the character.

See, not so far fetched.
