I'm going to ask the doctor for a strong anti-depresant for only a couple of days.

I won't go into it (personal), but what should I be asking for and what do you think he'll recommend. I'm going to need the strongest that's available on the market. I can cope and have coped with many struggles ( no drug and alcohol addiction, ever), but this one I think its best if I'm really (well, I hope you understand).

I know he'll recommend the right prescription for me, but I don't live in an English speaking country.

You'll get addicted to that stuff and then won't be able to come off of it.

A bottle of wine works better.

Never gonna happen. They do not start you off on a huge dose of the strongest on the market and there's no way a Dr will only give it to you for a "couple of days". You can't just walk in off the street and say "I'm having problems, give me the best ya got". These are not drugs to be taken lightly. If you've coped with many struggles, you should have no need for anti depressants.

Thanks guys. But different countries have different policies then America. I don't want to really take a drug, I'd prefer a natural route, but none is available, and with alcohol, well, maybe I'll end up with a bottle of Akadama Red Wine, don't know, but this is something I've never had to travel through before before.

Maybe try 5-HTP, it doesn't need to be prescribed by a doctor in most countries (try health food shops, or online herbal supplement suppliers). 5-HTP is just a naturally occurring amino acid and is a precursor of serotonin, serotonin is then a precursor of melatonin, so its usually pretty good for your general well being.

Or you could just take a Tryptophan supplement, which is a precursor to 5-HTP. Or just eat more protein... I suppose.

Tell the doctor that you suffer anxiety attacks when you travel and that you have a couple days of being in car coming up.

Tell him you usually take Xanax 2 MG during these attacks. You better not be driving and they are heavily addictive so be careful.

USA is easy to get prescription but more difficult in other Western countries. Enjoy the Benzo coma

Alprazolam is generic name outside U.S.

You're considering taking an antidepressant, so can we take it therefore that you are feeling depressed?

Don't seek advice here; visit your doctor.

What... so they hook ya up with frickin xannax or some anti depressant that has horrible side effects and then turn you into a slave to a pill!?!

Most doctors are no better than your average crack dealer.

ADs need between 4 and 6 weeks before they start to work.To beat depression is a long term fight but worth it. Sorry but no easy fix

Can we just establish some facts here, people?

Yes, antidepressants can take up to 4 weeks to take effect (longer than that is very exceptional). The operant phrase here is "up to"; on the two occasions in my life when I was prescribed them, they took precisely 3 days.

As you said it depends on the person, 4 to 6 weeks normal time line, however there are even some people who ADs do not work or work poorly. I agree with you ATS is NOT a good place to ask advice about things like this, always seek advice from professionals.

Long term use of marijuana can cause depression - my nephew has cannabis induced psychosis. Alcohol does not offer a beneficial outcome either - at least when you are sober.

To the OP. Depression is a mental health problem and you should be looking to tackle the cause. Being prescribed anti-depressants should only be considered a short-term fix.

Natural remedies for depression include St John's Wort and changing your diet e.g. to remove sugar. Exercise is also beneficial. If you want a long term fix, then consider getting a dog, moving to the country and changing your own expectations.

Just go get some naturally aged Italian meats like pepperoni or some real cheeses. Even a good quality natural yogurt without carrangeenan might help. Some mushrooms on a pizza made with real aged meats can work also. some Parmesan noodles can make you feel good too. Mushrooms sauteed with a little onions can make you feel good.

Any aged food can help with depression as long as you are not allergic to the microbes that form it. Microbes form some natural antidepressants. Kimchi can really mellow you out. Chinese foods can mellow you if you choose the right ones and don't forget the soy sauce on them, kikkomens or naturally fermented ones are the best.

Learn to eat some comfort foods like this when stressed, your food choices can alter mood a lot. A baked potato is good for mood too.

Naturally altering our diet can be the best way to combat stress. The antidepressents actually utilize what is known about these things, altering the pathways of the neurotransmitters. It will take some testing to alter the diet the right way, you need to train your mind to crave things at the right time. Vinegar and alcohol are created from the aging process but too much of these causes a necessity for more and more or you get withdrawals because of their potency.

Milk and meats also have bets blocker activity which can calm you. I can go on and on with options to fix the problem.

How does one know they'll be depressed for "only a couple days"?

Depression doesn't work like that.

Correct but the main point is the meds( all different types) are not like taking a pain killer. It's a progressive thing that needs time to make a change in your brain chemistry. Not only that but it may take years to actually find the right med/combo/dose. Couple that with working out your issues and you should be ok.

Like said before, go find a real professional.

Exactly. There's a difference between "don't leave me Johnny/Betty!" And " why can I not get myself together?!"

Stuff like that doesn't work for "only a couple of days." It takes a period of weeks to months to even have some idea how you are going to respond fully to it, if you are going to respond at all. Before then, your body's internal chemistry is all out of whack adjusting to what's being done.
