I would say it matches what lead does at a slowed speed.

I think when it buzzed in shallow it got hotter then normal and splat and when there was mud/dirt covering the rock face, sticking there assuming it was wet there once. then it just kinda got latched in the rock and the dirt eroded.

but the point I am making is that some want to complain because someone called it rocks, and in reality that is all your seeing.

No one can say definitively WHAT it is until a sample is analyzed. So for you to declare it a rock because there is no proof that it is anything else seems like shady science to me. I don't know what it is. Neither do you. You believe it is a rock. Ok. I can respect that. I don't respect that you KNOW it is a rock.

As far as I'm concerned, it's a cool 'SOMETHING' and I hope to one day know what it is, even if it turns out to be... a rock.

Have we come across anything like this on Mars so far...No.

In order for it to be like something else, there has to be something else like it found on Mars. Is there...No.

Is it present in one image and then not present in another?....Yes.

Does it blend in with surroundings...No.

Does it appear to be "Like" surroundings....No.

Does it seem to be made of similar material to surroundings.....No.

It's very difficult to convince me that a rock on Mars might be more than just a rock on Mars. Thus far, all of them have been just rocks on Mars, albeit fluffed up with "Oh em gee,it's a vase/woman/bug/animal!" Thus I usually roll my eyes hard, and close the Mars rocks threads.

Except this time. For once, there's something in the rocks on Mars that's grabbed my attention because of the simple hard-to-deny possibility. I pretty much looked like this guy after taking a gander at the picture last night:

I've waited for years for something to crop up in the pictures that would be a worthwhile thing to ponder. Yeah, this is hard to shrug off as yet another rock.

Could someone please explain why, in an image taken 37 minutes earlier, the "sunstone"/pareidolia/rock/fossil has decided to not look like a "sunstone"/pareidolia/rock/fossil, and has instead decided to look like a cocoon with a nice zig-zag line running down the middle.

At 12-48-25 UTC this image was taken appearing to show a cocoon like structure. Exact same spot as the facehugger, but 37 minutes earlier.

At 13-25-07 UTC this image was taken showing the now famous facehugger. Exact same spot as the cocoon, but 37 minutes later.

My own personal opinion...if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck...it's a duck.

If it looks like a facehugger/spider/crustacean type creature popping out of a cocoon that it has made to defend against the harsh environment on Mars, then that's probably what it is.

There is also this vid on youtube (which won't embed here, for some reason)
cocoon to creature video

For those who are doggedly still looking at these on cellphones, even a shot of Donald Trump at the beach will look like an anomalous rock/fossil, though that may well be an apt description

the two shots are just that much different to make the rotating gif , just a slither out of reach

interesting that the massive rocks in the background didn't make the first perspective

Interesting. When autolevel picture with my photo editor, all rocks are blue, except "the crab"

That is VERY interesting! Any chance you could do the same with the cocoon image? My image editor doesn't do what yours does!

The link to the raw Nasa image is in my post above. I'm guessing the cocoon will look very yellow.
Thanks in advance

Ps...nice gif funbox!

It seems TIME magazine had something about this up on August 3rd, 2015 (again, funbox imaged it August 10, 2014). Happily they've cleared it up for us, it's nothing, just the brain playing tricks. Now I can sleep easy (zzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzz). Whoops, woke up for a minute, so I'll post the link to TIME, which gently assures us that it aín't nuttin. time.com...

I havent read through all of the replies yet, but I saw the pictures and immediately thought, I wish that Arken was still around.

For the record, that doesn't look like a rock.

I assumed you didn't finish the article. How about clicking the hyperlink when the hitler teapot was mentioned?

It was perfectly applicable for the reading.

Perhaps I should have tried harder with my pictures of the cocoon and spider I posted earlier. Ovoid shapes and leggy spider shapes are easily confused.

Terribly sorry.

Cue overly melodramatic sigh...

no I didn't finish it ,but Ill bet they talked in-depth about pareidolia . I read and spent enough time chatting about it, ... but the thing is that, its of a colour and geometrical constancy to be considered one piece, or homogenous as a apposed to its settings/ surroundings. its not something made of parts or a culmination of shadow perspective geometric eye trickery.. it appears to me to be a feature within the rock or apart but attached to the rocks
