The Ancient Mayan Civilization

Im not sure if this was posted already but here goes..

I was wonder what everyones thoughts were on the ancient Mayan civilization and why they were so far advanced then every other civilization at the time...

Was it because they kept an open mind about anything and everything or was it because they were avid skywatchers and believed that the stars held the answer to our future

And why does the mayan calender end on December 21, 2012...is there some grreat catastrophic event to happen this, The winter solstice...they pick this day to end there 2300 year calender
