The vast majority of the energy in this world is generated via fossil fuels. I'd bet that at some point in your life you benefit from that.

The keyboard you use, the mouse, the monitor, anything else with even an ounce of plastic in it...oil based. You're using it. You buy it.

If you drive a car or WALK on a sidewalk...you benefit from oil.

Your computer/phone/TV/remote control/alarm clock most certainly have gold, and in some cases, diamonds, built into them.

A preacher is someone who preaches...and you're preaching about the evils of gold, oil, and diamonds, and you're using gold, oil, and possibly diamonds to do so!

You're truly a hypocrite, and in need of some education on gold, oil, and diamonds. Say what you will about certain powers benefiting from them more than most, and disproportionate values, but until you get your basic facts straight you can't possibly be taken seriously. I don't care if you don't WANT anything to do with gold or oil or diamonds - the fact is you ARE using them and your life benefits from them, so perhaps you should rethink your stance on this.

This is a self perpetuating problem, to be "accepted" by society you must have certain qualities, trades, monetary value etc
Once those goals have been reached, you become part of the problem, you'll entertain the same mentality and judge-mentality of worthiness on others.
It's like those who smoke and give up, they become far more critical of smokers than those who never have.

The trick here is to detach yourself from society, not to hide from it, but neither entertain it's ideology.
Follow your heart not your head, it doesn't know better.
Let the opinions of yourself far outweigh the opinions of others

Just because I benefit from these things does not mean I condone the actions of those that force the issue. I did not invent this crappy system. Living in the society that has been created by silly people to control the masses. I chose to be here and if you want to call it preaching you are part of the problem and not the solution.

Again, the fact I wrote this thread only means I want it to change, so how does it make me a hypocrite to try and extol the virtues of living in a society without trying to measure somebodies worth by what they own?

No honey, it is not self perpetuation to live in a world not of our making. It is survival. We have very little choice in the matter unless we are in the top 1 %. Let's be honest. That doesn't mean we have to consider the wealth of someone or the color of their skin or the sexual proclivities or the religion or lack thereof as a means to compose the worth of a human.

We are humans first and we are equal. No matter what our societal status is. That we can control. Sure we don't have to be materialistic, but we are expected to survive and basic necessities are our responsibility.

Right now having a cell phone and being connected to the Internet are basic necessities. Does it mean we have to buy the best and fastest connection or cell service or computers, no.

When we are forced to be without these items, how will the majority fair, horrible. Me I won't miss a beat. I will still be worth the same I am today if not more. How about you? Do you measure your worth by what technology you use?

You're wrong in your response to me. You could very well minimize your use of gold, oil, and diamonds, but you CHOOSE not to. Let's be clear - nobody is forcing you to sit on your computer, and nobody forced you to buy a computer, or pay for the electricity to run it. Your use of the things you despise only further discredits you. To say that having a cell phone or internet is a basic necessities, akin to food and water, is ridiculous. You are privileged to have a cell phone and internet - it is NOT a right nor a necessity. It is a convenience.

How can you take yourself seriously, and how can anyone take your points seriously, when you're using and enjoying the exact things you're opposing? Financially supporting those who deal in oil/gold/diamonds is a form of supporting them. Not only that, but you go on to prove Village Idiots point - you live in a world that IS your own making, like it or not. Anyone who thinks otherwise (barring the obvious, such as laws, others around you, foreign entities, etc - I'm referring to your immediate world) is wrong.

I think the overall degeneration and proliferation of capitalism and consumerism may be just a terrible accident going back thousands of years. In some sense "the fall in the garden" really did occur. Some sort of falling out of balance with the natural order. Although, from what I understand, tribal groups in the Amazon war and kill each other as well, but walk much lighter on the Earth itself. Perhaps it is the Anglo genetic line that actually "fell" into materialism when they discovered natural cycles such as sex/pregnancy/birth and planting/harvest cycles. Books like 'Guns, Germs and Steel' lay out a good explanation of this fall into agriculture, which paved the way to this type of Hell. A Frankenstein we have collectively, but unconsciously created that has slipped out of our control...

That's foolish. Using technology doesn't make you a hypocrite. Using it in the manner defined in the OP and than railing against it does. The OP touched on an important aspect of what's wrong with this world and you are outlining another, Ego.

There is no need to try to twist the intent of the OP when it's premiss is clear. As she stated she both recognizes what is wrong, how her actions contribute and is identifying what she can do about it.

To the OP, bravo! Any step in stabilizing yourself outside the system is great! You may never be truly free but you can get out of the trap.

We are born and we hopefully mature. I believe as a species we came and went many times. Some individuals mature but the system is ruled by the immature!! Until a notable progression in the maturation of the species exists more of the same.

Everything is allowed in freedom, the worst like the best. When an extreme is reach globally, looking back in time, it's always corrected in one way or another. Are you aware of how much Gold and other "precious" metals are in that computer you are using? Are you aware of the amount of natural resources spend putting it together? Are you aware of the Oil being burned to provide it (and your ISP) with power? These things do not run on a sense of self satisfaction.
