MOUNT DORA -- Mount Dora police will be pulling drivers over for obeying the law. Officers are rewarding safe drivers with $10 gift cards to a cafe or coffee shop in downtown Mount Dora. Police will be looking for drivers who are driving the speed limit and wearing their seat belts. “The department’s goal is to reinforce safe driving habits and say a small thanks to our community,” said Mount Dora Deputy Police Chief Robert Bell.

IMO this is thinly veiled oppression. I wonder how long it will be before people start getting shot. One would think if the intent was as cut and dry as they want it to look they could just mail them out after a quick look at a database for the local area or have an automated system that automatically sends said good driving gifts to said good drivers.. This is bad... I would be annoyed "sorry boss, I'm late bc a cop pulled me over for driving with my seatbelt on". pfft

That's because "they know who you are" and making sure you are being a good boy/girl, lol. Seriously though, sounds like the 42 fake to me. Will they search your car as well?

After they search your car they will search your house, phone and computer so they can give you a gift card for not being involved with any sort of criminal activity. Nothing to fear nothing to hide, right...?

I'm Canadian, so the law is different here regarding pulling a person over; but, In the US, isn't this against your constitutional rights?

Isn't it unlawful to do this?

When you get pulled over, the police have suspended several of your rights temporarily.

That is why they do it if you aren't following the law.

I wonder if they will be asking for "voluntary " DNA swabs as well.

Good point, I forgot about that.

You would think after nearly 40 years, I would remember that more quickly.

Hopefully the general public won't be so excited about $10 measly dollars that they forget about the law.

I wonder how many of the good drivers they pull will somehow end up having warrants for their arrest

No one can ever do anything nice in this world anymore...just to be nice. So many critics. So much rage. Sigh....

They won't call it a "search" of your car. They'll say "As part of your reward for safe diving, we will thoroughly clean the interior and trunk of your car.."

I think I'll print up some bumper stickers that say, NO THANKS.

And sell them for 5.00.
Maybe use the cash for police body cams.

Hm.

Seems like a way to scrape up some "probable cause" for a vehicle search.

Most law-abiding citizens rarely drive exactly at the speed limit anyway.

EDIT: And I'm not paying the police to be "cool" or "nice" and hand out gift cards. I'm paying them to protect my community and I. They ought to be patrolling around looking for obvious violations of the law or being sent on calls.

If they want to throw a BBQ for their community members that haven't had a traffic ticket or run in with the law on their off time -- go right ahead.

Prefer they go after people that aren't. People that are obeying the law don't need to see flashing lights in their mirror.

This is a poorly though out subjugation ploy.

Thank you officer, if I have a problem I'll_call_you.

Unless the police are taking DNA swabs I'm totally fine with this and appreciate the free coffee for driving safe.

Problem is, I don't drive the speed limit BUT I am always on the lookout for sneaky cops trying to catch me speeding. Funny story, I have a radar detector but 9 times out 10 cops aren't using radar guns.

Not this again. I don't wanna die. This is nothing but a discriminatory roving checkpoint. I cannot believe our masters
are so flagrant! Apparently, they, and their brownshirts, have too much time on their hands.

If I were going to risk my life via perpetual threat of having to interact with police, I'd just stay home, and appear as though nothing were troubling me. Works every time.

YEAH BABY!!!!

Maybe each person wearing a seatbelt in the same vehicle should be rewarded.
That would be the right thing to do since a driver can be fined for a passenger not wearing a seatbelt. Of course so can the passengers (at least in Oregon, as my friend who was riding passenger once can attest to).
