They're tracked by transponder. The aircraft sends a unique identifier, along with altitude, airspeed, and other information. You're not looking at a radar picture. It's normally sent by a dedicated radio signal, but newer types also use satellites, if the aircraft is equipped.

He doesn't believe in satellites...

They are difficult to reconcile with a flat Earth.

Well you see, he considered the sparkly things in the sky.... "lights"

Apparently we have no idea what they are because of atmospheric issues...

Satellites are akin to the tooth fairy... and perhaps rumple Rumplestiltskin

Odd that people didn't notice those lights in the olden days.
Or are they a recent addition designed to perpetuate the hoax of a round Earth?

apparently they're just lights in the firmament...

I happen to state that we can actually see satellites on a clear night, and that i've seen literally hundreds... another flat earther said, "oh they're just wandering lights"

Lost me at that point

When my daughter was little I used to be able to convince her to come out and see satellites with me (thanks to heavensabove.com). We played a game of "who spots it first." One night a bright pass of the ISS was on the schedule so we went out to see it. I spotted the station first. She won though, when she said "There's another one!" It was the shuttle, having undocked a bit earlier and following close behind. It was an unexpected treat.

That would be something to see... I've caught the ISS a few times, but not a ship
